Dear Alex,

This new competition is based on just "uninterrupted ais feeding" isnt it?

so, what about visible vessels and receptions range?
are they unimportant for contest?

if you dont evaluate those criteria nobody work hard for send more datas.
I can put my one of receivers on a corner with an UPS and send very few feeds but uninterrupted.

Why I put my all stations in this competition?
Why I work for better reception on my stations?
If I think just for this contest, there is no reason for work hard..

If you don't want this happens you should evaluate all criterias..
if you dont evaluate "radio stuff" how could you call it "radio contest"?
it is just "UPS operating contest" or "best uninterrupted internet service provider contest" with this criteria..

Please add VISIBLE VESSELS and RECEPTION RANGE to the contest as criteria..

Best regards..

Hello ookten,

We've been evaluating all criteria and initially had range and vessel count as a factor for additional points. However, we had to decided against them.

Vessel Count: It wouldn't be completely fair if your receiver is placed in a strait or channel (like Bosporus or the English Channel). A LOT of ships are passing those areas during the day and nobody with a receiver in a port would have a chance.

Reception Range: It's too easy to fake. The range is based on the coordinate you set for yourself on the map. So one could just set the coordinate 100 km off and all received ships would be +100km more away.

This is the only fair way we came up with, it seems more fair to everyone. If you have further suggestions, please do so :)

in this way who have a good UPS system and good internet service provider will be winner..

We have more power cuts than any other european country, is this fair?

also there is nothing about radio.. just about electricity and internet..

I dont understand, what is the main goal of this contest?

I'm not sure, the user could have multiple receivers placed around that area. However, generally you should still put the marker exactly where your receiver is located.

Dear Ozgur,

As Alex advised you we find it more fair the radio amateur to keep an eye on his / her station to work with no long-term interruptions than vessel number that station shows and the range of perception of the station.

For example one person could send the data from a small port with poor traffic and the other could set the station in some crowded by vessels port like Gibraltar.

It is not possible to count the points by the range of perception from the technical point of view.

Note that we will have such competitions all the time. And we appreciate your activity in the community and your contribution to our project.

As per our conversation on the phone I hope all the issues are solved and you will let us know your ideas and suggestions.
It is always nice to speak with you on the phone :)

IS the location specified for "MARMARA REGION in TURKEY" correct??

so, this is not my responsibility..
They have to think about every think before that who organizing this contest..

I'm operating 3 stations in different locations in MARMARA REGION..
I'm combining all datas from stations and send datas of a geographical area to the contest..
My station mark is about geographical center of my stations.. so there is no cheat or something wrong..

but there is another and a big problem that is about purpose of the contest!

and I'm still insisting that this is not a radio contest!!..
There is only just 2 criteria for competition;
1) Having an Uninterupted Power Supply
2) Having an Uninterupted Internet Connection

and non of them about RADIO or AIS or any other technical radio skills..
Who have this two feature will be guaranteed winner!

What we competition for?
What is the main purpose??
------------------o----------------------

After I wrote this message I talked with Elena..
She explain me the purpose of the contest..
I understand that. thank you to her..

anyway, I don't have a perfect ISP or an UPS that could overcome with our electric company!.
actually nobody have them in Turkey!.. :-(
so, I'm not a candidate for winning..

I wish chance for all participants!

I'll share my suggestion for a real radio contest after some time of thinking..

ookten: real radio contest

covered area? depends on traffic...
maximun distance? depends on traffic... depends on conditions of your Location .
You have mountains - but they aren't present at my QTH.

Let's think together , it is possible to arrange Radio competition?

To Shippingexplorer team :

There should be accurate rules, but in this competition they aren't present.
There is only a short description, and it is obviously not enough of it.

The Russian version of the contest page is a little different. Have you tried reading the English one, maybe it's more clear? What exactly are you having problems with?

Who can participate? Its nothing told about it on the English page.

At present moment I share the data for 36 hours without breaks ... but i still have no points.

In the rules it does say "at the end of the month". So all points between the 1st and the 31st of a month are considered; after that everyone's points are reset to 0.

Who can participate?
Obviously everyone can participate :)

Points are only counted for full days. Obviously you won't get 5 points for the day when you start sharing at 22:00 ;) The points are always updated at midnight (CET) for the previous day.

I do not understand system of charge of points.

The station "Sheffield_Pirate" gets points, but I never saw in its statistics
the quantity of visible vessels .

visible vessels: 0 reception: 0 km

Why? How?

Good catch. Something is being sent (that's why it's not displayed as 'offline') but it doesn't appear to be any valid AIS data.
The points will be revoked and in the future points will only be awarded to people with actual AIS data ;)

ookten: any other technical radio skills

I use the self-made Moxon-Beam , modified (discriminator output) Alinco DJ-182, AISmon to
decode and AISdispatcher to share , is this enough for "radio skills"?? :)

Sure, those are very good radio skills..
unfortunately this contest does not measure this skills..

because it is not possible at all

Your equipment is switched on and you are sitting near .

Sometimes you should take a look on it, to be sure that everything is ok.

Nothing else should be done.

Like I said: if you have an idea how to fairly reward people for antenna performance and reliability without favoring those who live at a strait... then please, share your ideas :)
Reliability is a pretty important factor for live data. Imagine a pilot who can't navigate his plane because the navigation system went down ;) Distance is important too because it also reflects the antenna's performance; but it can't be measured fairly by us, it's too easy to cheat.

the data we collect is not for use in navigation purposes..
