Amsterdam cargo throughput grows 3 percent in 2011
Dutch port's total volume in 2011 rose 3 percent, container volume fell 28 percent
The port of Amsterdam boosted total cargo traffic by 3 percent in 2011 from a year ago but container volume plummeted 28 percent, as the Dutch port struggled to attract ocean carriers away from rivals Le Havre and Hamburg, the Journal of Commerce reported.

The rise in cargo throughput to 74.8 million metric maintains Amsterdam’s ranking as Europe’s fourth largest port after Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg. But Amsterdam has virtually ceased to be a mainline container port as traffic tumbled to just over 600,000 metric tons from 800,000 tons in 2010, which was less than half the 1.9 million tons handled in 2009.

The port, which lost it last major scheduled container service in late 2009, did not say how many 20-foot equivalent units it handled in 2011. The 3 percent increase in Amsterdam’s total traffic outpaced growth of just 0.8 percent in Rotterdam, but its giant Dutch rival boosted box traffic by 6 percent to a record 11.9 million TEUs in 2011.

Coal and oil were Amsterdam’s top performing cargoes, both growing by 9 percent to 15.5 million tons and 37.1 million tons, respectively. This outweighed a 12 percent drop in agriculture bulk traffic to around 8 million tons. Roll-on, roll-off and car shipments also increased by 9 percent to 900,000 tons.

Total traffic in Amsterdam and its satellite ports in the North Sea canal grew by around 3 percent to 92 million tons.

Ports in the Dutch Amsterdam-North-Sea-Canal Area increased bulk cargo handling volumes in first half of 2011 by 4% year-on-year to 42.62 million mt, with a steep rise in liquid cargoes stemming weaker dry bulk throughputs, initial data obtained from the Amsterdam port authority showed Tuesday.
Liquid bulk passing through the ports of Amsterdam, Beverwijk, IJmuiden and Zaanstad rose 15.6% on-year to 20.97 million mt, driven by a 20% rise in refined products volumes to 19.81 million mt. Crude oil throughputs, however, dropped 76.2% from a low prior-base to 34,694 mt.
Dry bulk volumes handled in the Amsterdam area eased 5.3% to 21.65 million mt, with a 5.4% decline in ores to 4.58 million mt and a 1.9% fall in coal throughputs to 9.2 million mt adding to downward pressures.
New half-year data from Amsterdam's smaller rival at Hamburg in north Germany, which posted a 1.8% decline in bulk cargo volumes to 19.4 million mt, indicate a slightly different trend for bulk commodities. Iron ore volumes passing through the country's largest seaport dropped 6.3% on-year to 4.5 million mt and petroleum product volumes firmed 4.5% to 2.1 million mt, spokesman Bengt van Beuningen at the ports marketing affiliate HHM said Tuesday, mirroring trend directions seen at Amsterdam. However, coal throughputs hiked 12.7% to 2.8 million mt and crude handling volumes were up 3.3% at 2.1 million mt.

Medel container terminal approved
The container terminal at the Medel Business Park in Tiel will be built. The Council of State has rejected the objections of nearby residents to the zoning plan that makes construction possible, portofrotterdam reports. According to the planning schedule, construction is set to start next year on the 200-metre long loading and unloading quay along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, the first phase of the project.
The development of the terminal is a joint project by Partner Logistics and Container Terminal Utrecht. Expectations are that about 40,000 containers per year will be handled here, a number which can increase to up to 80,000 per year. The second phase of the project will entail the construction of a cold-storage warehouse complex for Bon Coldstores.
The terminal will be able to fulfil an important role in the import/export of refrigerated and fresh products such as fruit by inland waterways from and to the Rotterdam port. An entirely new cold-storage terminal must be built here, not only for fruit but for all refrigerated products.

Antwerp, Amsterdam, Rotterdam may bid on Germany’s one-third stake in Rhine river port of Duisburg

The ports of Antwerp, Amsterdam and Rotterdam are considering a joint bid for the German government's stake in Duisburg, the world's biggest inland port.

The German government is seeking buyers for its one third shareholding in the Rhine river port of Duisburg, a major intermodal hub at the center of the Ruhr industrial belt.
The Antwerp, Amsterdam and Rotterdam port authorities view a strategic stake in Duisburg as key to their plans to boost the share of inland shipping and rail in hinterland transport which currently is dominated by trucking.
The three ports want to limit trucking's share of hinterland traffic, mainly containers, to between 35 percent and 40 percent, a Rotterdam spokesman said.
They also want to promote Duisburg as a rail hub that will bundle traffic to the three ports and improve their competitive position in the German and central European ocean cargo markets.
The three ports are currently considering how to mount a joint bid for the German government's Duisburg stake.
Duisburg boosted container traffic 25 percent in 2010 from the previous year to 2.25 million twenty foot equivalent units, outpacing growth of around 17 percent at Rotterdam and Antwerp, Europe’s top two box hubs.
Overall cargo volume soared to almost 28 million metric tons in 2010 from 22.8 million metric tons in 2009 and fell just short of the record 28.3 million metric tons handled in 2008.
The port's other shareholders, each with one third stakes, are the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Duisburg.

Dutch ports to reward clean vessels in 2011

The ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Moerdijk and Dordrecht have announced they will be rewarding environmentally clean ocean-going vessels from January 1, 2011.
Vessels that score well on the new Environmental Ship Index (ESI) will be given a discount on their port dues.
The ESI was designed by the ports of Le Havre, Bremen, Hamburg, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It measures a ship's emissions based on the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter (PM) it releases.
Vessels are graded from one to 100, with 100 representing a ship with no toxic emissions. The cleaner the ship, the lower the port charges it will have to pay.
The ports of Amsterdam, Moerdijk, Dordrecht and Rotterdam will be the first to start using the ESI. The aim is to clean up the air around the main harbours in the Netherlands.
"It is very important that seaports develop in a sustainable way. Making port tariffs greener and rewarding clean vessels is in keeping with this. The more ports and ships that use the ESI, the more this will start to influence behaviour in the shipping industry," said Dertje Meijer, director of the Port of Amsterdam.
Antwerp, Hamburg and Bremen have also announced their intention to use the ESI.
The ESI is part of the World Port Climate Initiative, a collective of 55 ports that work actively to reduce air pollution, and the emission of CO2 in particular.

Freighter and passenger ferry collide near Amsterdam

A freighter near Amsterdam collided with a passenger ferry, capsizing the smaller vessel, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
The skipper of the ferry is missing; it is not known at this time if any passengers were aboard the ferry, which transports pedestrians across the busy Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.
“We cannot be exactly sure, but at this moment we think there was one person on board (the passenger ferry),” Police spokesman Carine Portengen told the Daily Mail. “The first hour is crucial to save someone who is in the water... so the chances are very unlikely if he is in the water that he will be found alive.”
The cargo ship was an inland freight vessel from Germany. Police said they were questioning the captain of the German ship and he had tested negative for alcohol.
Divers were in the water this morning looking for victims. A helicopter was using infrared sensors searched for warm spots.
The collision occurred near the town of Nieuwer Ter Aa, about six miles south of Amsterdam, at around 7 a.m.
Traffic on the canal has been halted.
Swetsodv, which owns the ferry, said on its Twitter feed the boat is “out of commission.” The ferry carries only about a dozen pedestrians and no motor vehicles.
The 72-km long canal connects the port city of Amsterdam to the Rhine, a major European shipping artery.
