Port of Ilyichevsk set to downsize, faces walkout threat

The management of Ukrainian state-owned Ilyichevsk (Illichivsk) Commercial Sea Port (SCPI), under the pressure of local labor Union, fell back and agreed to dismiss only 100 employees instead of about 500 jobs cut the company had previously planned, Dumskaya.net reports.

Port of Ilyichevsk planned to cut jobs due to “lack of funds” back in September 2011, postponed the move to February 20, but eventually failed because local labor union had warned it would call a strike.


The port’s authorities met with union’s leaders and announced that the layoff order execution is canceled until March 21 and the number of job cuts was reduced to 100 people, primarily those who have reached retirement age.


The enterprise streamlining its business also announced the spinoff of social infrastructure (kindergartens, a recreation and sports centers, a hotel, etc.


In 2011, the Port of Ilyichevsk discharged 575 workers. Now the enterprise workforce is 6,500 employees.


Many port workers are confident that the SCPI management is set to prepare the company for privatization to reduce its assets value. Thus, the company decided to commence downsizing because mass layoffs will be not possible after the privatization, Dumskaya.net reported.

NCC box terminal resumes operations at Ilyichevsk
Container terminal of Ukrtranscontainer (UTC), part of National Container Company (NCC), on February 16, 2012 resumed work at the port of Ilyichevsk (Illichivsk), NCC news release said.

The joint activity contract between private company Ukrtranscontainer and state-run Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk.SCPI is effective again following the ruling of Economic Court of the Odessa region.

"The transfer of control over the facility from SCPI to the UTC was carried out without termination of the terminal operation. As of now, all arrangements required to restart the terminal have been fully implemented," the NCC report says.

The stevedore service provider Ukrtranscontainer has signed agreements with all shipping lines making calls at the port of Ilyichevsk to ensure the services on the same contractual terms that they had with SCPI.

Ukrtranscontainer (UTC) is the container terminal at the port of Ilyichevsk, member of the NCC Group. In 2007, the company invested $56 m in the terminal expansion. The completion of the first phase investment program "4 M" boosted the facility’s capacity up to 850,000 TEUs. UTC is the first stevedoring company in Ukraine, which started providing fixed windows services for container ships, as well as the services for handling of 8,000-teu boxships, operating on direct services from Asia.

National Container Company (NCC) was founded in 2002 and has turned into a leading container terminal operator in Russia and CIS countries, with its network aggregated throughput of over 2.8 million TEUs.
NCC is owned 50/50 by First Quantum Group and FESCO Transport Group. The NCC portfolio of stevedoring assets includes First Container Terminal (FCT, St. Petersburg), NUTEP Container Terminal (Novorossiysk), Ukrtranscontainer (Ilyichevsk, Odessa region, Ukraine), Ust-Luga Container Terminal (Leningrad region), Logistika Terminal (Shushary St. Petersburg) and Wilhelmshaven-based JadeWeserPort (Germany). In 2011, container traffic at the NCC terminals network was about 1.3m TEUs.

Port of Ilyichevsk handles largest ever Panamax ship

The dry bulk carrier Searose G (Bahamas flagged) laden with 77,450 tons of coal docked at Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk (SCPI, Ukraine) on January 2, 2012. The 14.37-draft bulker is the largest Panamax ship ever handled at the Ukrainian port, the Port Authority said.

The Searose G has a length of 247 m, beam - 32 m, deadweight - 79, 915 tons.

In October 2010, Ilyichevsk port handled the Dominica-flagged Tinos Warrior, the largest Capesize bulker with a record 208.739 DWT, length of 315 m and breadth of 50 m.

Ukraine’s port handles largest ever boxship

On November 6th, the Tubul called at Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk (Ilyichevsk) en route to Odessa port, the biggest container ship that ever docked at a Ukrainian port, the company said.

The 8,006teu boxship arrived from Istanbul. The Tubul has deadweight of 94.660 tons, length - 300 m, breadth - 46 m, draft - 13.5 m. The Tubul docked at berth number 3 of Illichivsk port to discharge 646 containers and take on board 658 boxes. On November 8 the vessel will make for Odessa.


"Illichivsk port is able to accommodate 3 ocean-going containerships at a time with a capacity of over 5,000 TEUs and 300 m in length. The previous largest boxship, the Palena, visited SCPI in 2009. The Tubul exceeds her capacity by 1.460 TEUs and in deadweight tonnage - by 13.41 tons,” the port authorities said.

Ilyichevsk port cargo traffic down 11.8 percent in Jan-Oct

Throughput of Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk (SCPI) in January-October of 2011 fell 11.8 percent from a year earlier, to 10,099,000 tons, the state-owned company said.



In October, handling of cargo rose by 2 percent as compared with September numbers, to 1,120,000 tons.


Shipments of liquid bulk cargo soared 80 percent month-on-month, general cargo volume rose by 22.6%. Handling of metal surged by 84 percent, of iron – by 42 percent, of vehicles – by 37%, of edible oil - by 78%, of oil meal – by 75%. The company reported a 35 percent decline in the segment of bulk cargo due to reduced grain exports.


In October, Port of Ilyichevsk handled 184 vessels and 14,140 railcars.

Ilyichevsk port’s cargo traffic grows 7.2% in Q3, 2011

Throughput of state-owned Sea Commercial Port of Illichivsk (SCPI) in the third quarter of 2011 rose by 7.2 percent from a year earlier, to 3,166,000 tons, the company said.

Exports/imports increased by 7.3% on Q2, 2011.

In September, handling of cargo rose by 8.7% compared to last year’s figures.

The September volume gain was driven by increased shipments of bulk cargo (+16.7%) and general cargo (+4.5%). The port saw a 54 percent dramatic growth in exports of iron cargo. Handling of sulfur surged by 40%, imports of vehicles rose as much as 33%, exports of grain increased by 15%, of ore – by 8%.
