Contargo to build new terminal in German hinterland

International logistics provider Contargo has developed a hub in the German hinterland, with capacity for approximately one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The hub will be used to build a terminal the size of 12 hectares, with eight quay cranes, and will be located between Nijmegen and Düsseldorf.
According to Contargo, approximately 1000 TEUs commute between the terminals and the seaports, resulting in a need for more specialised cranes on the sea terminals.
Contargo says that the 1000 TEU units will be divided in the sea ports to between 350 to 500 TEUs per terminal.
The extra handling costs at the mega hub are estimated to be $26 to $39 per TEU, in large quantities with high handling speed, according to Contargo.
Development of the new terminal will cost approximately $130 million.
Contargo hopes to start the project between 2015 to 2016.

The largest Mobile Harbour Crane in the Port of Hamburg, a G HMK 7608 built by Gottwald Port Technology, was put into service at the universal terminal owned by C. Steinweg (Sьd-West-Terminal) GmbH & Co. KG at the end of September. Coincidentally, this G HMK 7608 is also the first Harbour Crane of the new Generation 5 series, successfully launched by Gottwald in the spring of 2006, to go into service in Germany. To date, Gottwald, based in Dьsseldorf, Germany, that celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, has received orders for more than 20 of its new Generation 5 Harbour Cranes.
