Fire destroys luxury yachts at Polish shipyard
Firefighters in Poland are battling a blaze that has broken out at a ship-making facility in the northern city of Gdansk, famous for being the cradle of Lech Walesa's Solidarity movement. Authorities said there were no injuries, AP reports.
The all-news station TVN24 reported the fire broke out on Thursday evening in a building where luxury yachts are produced.
A spokesman for the firefighters, Mr Tomasz Czyz, told TVN24 that there were chemical substances in the burning building but it was too soon to know if there was a risk of chemical contamination for people in the area.
The shipbuilding facility is located in Gdansk, the Baltic sea coast city where Walesa's Solidarity movement was founded 30 years.

Gdańsk's port set to compete with Hamburg
The Gdańsk seaport will now be able to compete with some of the largest ports in Europe for the custom clearance of large vessels, such as those originating from China, reported Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, Warsaw Business Journal reports. Up until now, the German port of Hamburg was regarded as more attractive by importers due to its more advanced infrastructure and efficient procedures.
Gdańsk has expanded to accommodate larger cargo ships, and has implemented a more advanced computer system to service larger importers. Last year, the cargo turnover at the port of Gdańsk increased by over 400 percent compared to 2008. This year, another record is expected.

Wilhelmsen opens safety service centre in Poland
Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has recently opened a new Fire, Rescue and Safety (FRS) service station in Gdansk, Poland, to serve vessels in the Baltic Sea.
The service station is located in Gdansk and has the capacity to serve all ships in the Gdansk and Gdynia ports and repair yards. Roger Gundermann, WSS Technical Manager for Europe, commented, “A large, new workshop has been purpose-built and includes impressive modern equipment. The service centre is suitable for the wider range of WSS Safety Services. We can confirm that this station is one of the most modern on the Baltic Sea and is ready to fulfil all orders coming from our customers.”
In addition to having approvals from DNV, LR and RMRS for the global WSS service network, this service centre has also been approved by the Polish Maritime Authority.
This new FRS service station in Gdansk, together with the company’s liferaft service station in Szczecin, enables WSS to offer a full range of safety services and liferaft exchange to vessels in the Baltic region.

Polish-German joint venture to build zł.800-million terminal in Gdańsk
Polish treasury-owned PERN Przyjaźń, a petroleum logistics firm, is expected to sign a joint venture agreement with German petrolium logistics company Oiltanking in September. The deal will pave the way for the construction of an oil and chemical storage and transhipment terminal worth zł.800 million in Gdańsk, reports Puls Biznesu.
PERN will have to ask the European Commission for permission before it can sign the contract, the newspaper added.
According to PERN Przyjaźń's president Robert Soszyński, the German partner is indispensable.
"We won't manage on our own, especially since the company is taking care of a few other investments," Mr Soszyński told Puls Biznesu. He also believes there is a lack of expertise for such a project in Poland.
The German company will be responsible for financing, building and using the terminal.
The building of the terminal is set to begin next year.
