Port of Liepaja traffic rises 35.4 percent in Jan-Feb
Freight flows passing through Latvia-based Port of Liepaja in January-February grew by 35.4% year-on-year to more than 1.02 million tons, the Port Authority said.


In the reporting period, shipments of grain cargo soared 2.29 times from 2011’s figures, to 439,700 tons, of coal - by 8.2% to 19,700 tons. The volume of construction materials soared 46.9% to 50,100 tons, while shipments of wood pellets decreased by 21% to 16,200 tons.


Handling of petroleum products shrank by 2.8 times to 34,300 tons, shipments of crude oil – by nearly 15% to 12,900 tons. The volume of timber cargo grew by almost 16% to 138,200 tons. The volume of handled scrap metal increased by 2.2 times to 113,800 tons, of ferrous metals - declined by 2.7 times to 46,900 tons.


Container throughput rose by 2.3 times to 600 TEUs, transshipments of rolling cargoes increased by 1.74 times to 4,285 units. Passenger traffic increased by 1.8 times from a year earlier to 4571 people. The number of calls increased by 12.3% to 264,000 ships.


Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Liepaja ranks third port of Latvia by handled cargo volume. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2011, Liepaja handled 4.85 million tons of cargo.

Port of Liepaja traffic volumes grow 18.6 percent

In January 2012, cargo throughput at Latvia’s Port of Liepaja rose 18.6% compared to the same period last year, to 458,100 tons, the Port Authority said.


The traffic growth in Jan. was driven by a 60.4-percent spike in grain shipments (156,400 tons) and a 69-percent surge in construction materials volumes (28,900 tons). Handling of timber cargo increased by 27% from a year before, to 66,400 tons. Exports of scrap metal leaped by nearly two times, to 45,900 tons, of non-ferrous metals - by more than threefold year-on-year, to 9,400 tons, shipments of chemical goods increased by 20.5% to 5,300 tons, of crude oil – by 16.4% to 6,400 tons.


In the reporting period, the port of Liepaja saw a 68.6% slump in petroleum product volumes to 20,400 tons. Handling of ferrous metals decreased by 37.3% to 40,600 tons, of coal - by 10.4% to 8,600 tons.


In January, container traffic soared by as much as four times from 2011’s numbers to 324,000 TEUs. Transshipment of Ro-Ro cargo increased by 1.6 times to 1,834 units. The number of calls was up by 12.2% to 137 vessels. Passenger traffic rose by more than 1.5 times to 10,073 people.

Port of Liepaja throughput grows 10.5 percent to 3.94m tons

Cargo traffic at the Latvian port of Liepaja in January-October increased by 10.5% compared with the same period last year, to 3.94 million tons, the Port Authority said.


Ten-month volume of grain cargo was down 6.9 percent on last year’s numbers, to 1.04 million tons, while handling of construction materials rose by more than twofold to 467,600 tons.

Shipments of timber cargo fell by 23.9 % to 591,900 tons. Exports of scrap metal surged 57.2 percent to 301,200 tons. The volume of ferrous metals decreased by 33.2% to 256,200 tons, of non-ferrous metals rose by more than 2.49 times to 107,300 tons. of Coal volume soared by almost twofold to 105,600 tons. Transshipment of oil products increased by 12.7% to 376,100 tons, of crude oil fell by 13.2% to 87,500 tons, of chemical goods decreased by 33.1% to 36,200 tons.
Container traffic grew by nearly two times, to 2,666 TEUs. Handling of rolling cargo grew by 2.19 times, to 14,923 units.


In the reporting period, the number of calls increased by 6.8% to 1,197 ships. Passenger traffic through the port more than doubled, to 16,682 people.


Monthly volume of cargo handled at the port in October amounted to 450,500 tons.

Port of Liepaja cargo traffic up 10.3 percent in Jan-Sept

Throughput of the port of Liepaja in January-September 2011 grew by 10.3% compared to the same period of last year, to 3.49 million tons, the Port Authority said.

Grain shipments declined by 10% year-on-year, to 867,800 tons, the volume of construction materials more than doubled from last year’s figures, to 409,300 tons, handling of timber cargo shrank by 23.7% to 535,400 tons, scrap metal transshipment soared 58% to 263,300 tons.

Nine-month volume of ferrous metals slumped by nearly 30% to 251,000 tons, shipments of non-ferrous metals increased by more than 2.46 times to 95,700 tons. The volume of oil products rose by 19% to 366,600 tons, of coal - increased as much as 1.8 times to 98,600 tons. Handling of crude oil decreased by 19% to 71,900 tons, of chemical goods - by 40.3% to 31,300 tons.

In January-September, container traffic surged by more than twofold, to 2,413 TEUs. Rolling cargo volume grew by 2.48 times to 13,232 units.

The number of ship calls increased by 6.8% to 1,075 vessels. Passenger traffic increased by 2.3 times to 14 thousand 836 people.

Cargo throughput of the port in September amounted to 401,400 tons.

Port of Liepaja cargo traffic up 16.4 percent in Jan-Aug

Throughput of the Latvian port of Liepaja for eight months of the year grew by 16.4 percent year-on-year, to 3,175,600 tons, the Port Authority said.


Shipments of grain cargo fell 12.5 percent to 704,900 tons, petroleum products volume rose by 25.4 percent from a year earlier, to 347,800 tons (diesel fuel was up 10.2% to 42,200 tons). Construction materials totaled 329.500 tons.



Cargo throughput in August amounted to 435.600 tons.

Throughput of Liepaja port is up 15.8 percent

Trade flows passing through the port of Liepaja in January-July 2011 increased by 15.8% compared with the same period of last year, to 2.74 million tons, the Port Authority said.

In the reporting period, shipments of grain fell 10.7% to 625 300 tons, building materials volume more than doubled from last year, to 276 300 tons, handling of wood pellets surged by 3.3 times to 96 600 tons, transshipment of oil products increased by 20.5% to 307 000 tons, including 40 900 tons of diesel fuel (+6.8%), while timber cargo dropped by 24 6% to 428 300 tons. Transshipment of scrap metal rose by 2.34 times to 233 500 tons, handling of ferrous metals declined by 10% to 244 700 tons, of nonferrous metals - rose by 2.1 times to 69 500 tons.

Container traffic jumped by 2.44 times to 1 881 TEUs. Ro-Ro cargo soared by almost threefold, to 10 238 units.

The number of calls was up 10.3% to 851 vessels.

Cargo throughput of the port in July amounted to 379 500 tons.
