Oil-tanker BW Rhine hijacked off West Africa

The oil-products tanker BW Rhine was hijacked April 28 off Togo in West Africa, the company that owns the vessel said, Bloomberg reports. The status of the tanker, which has a capacity of 75,678 deadweight tons, isn’t known, Nick Fell, Singapore-based general counsel for BW Maritime, said by phone today. The last contact the company had with the ship’s crew was on April 30, he said.
The carrier was partly loaded with refined fuel and BW Maritime has been working with local navies to locate it, he said. The tanker sailed to West Africa from Ventspils, Latvia, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. Its depth in the water is 12.6 meters (41 feet) out of a maximum of 14.7 meters, the data show.

Baltic Coal Terminal throughput soars 55 percent

Coal shipments from Ventspils-based Baltic Coal Terminal in January-April 2012 leaped by 55 percent year-over-year to 1,686,280 tons, the stevedore company said.

In April, the volume of coal handled at the facility totaled 504,950 tons, a 1.8 times growth compared to last year’s numbers.

Baltic Coal Terminal is a JV of two companies: CJSC MPO Kuzbass and Ventspils Commercial Sea Port. In 2010, coal throughput at the terminal amounted to about 2 million tons. Currently, the coal handled at the BCT’s terminal is exported largely to the UK, Belgium, Spain and Morocco. The terminal’s indoor warehouse allows simultaneous storage of 210,000 tons of coal, (capacity - 6 m t/y). The two companies have invested in the first phase of the terminal EUR 80 million.

Port of Ventspils cargo traffic rises 19 percent to 8.5 m tons
Cargo throughput at Ventspils Free Port in the first quarter of 2012 increased by 19% compared to January-March 2011, exceeding 8.5 million tons, the Port Authority said.

In January-March, the port’s terminals handled 4.7 million tons of oil products a 25-percent growth year-over-year, 2.4 million tons of coal, a twofold surge from last year’s figure and 454,000 tons of Ro-Ro cargoes (+13 %).

In March, freight traffic passing through the port totaled 3.2 million tons (+3%). Shipment of coal reached 969,000 tons.

The three-month volume gain was driven largely by three terminals: handling of cargo at Ventspils Nafta Terminal boosted by 21%, throughput at Ventspils Commercial Port soared 61%, Baltic Coal Terminal demonstrated a 47-percent growth and cargo volume handled at Ventbunkers rose 38% year-over-year.

Port Ventspils traffic volumes soar 61% in January

Cargo throughput at the port of Ventspils in January 2012 surged by 61% y-o-y fueled by liquid bulk, loose cargo and coal traffic, to more than three million tons, the Port Authority statistics said.


In the reporting period Free Port Ventspils saw 1.6 million tons of liquid bulk cargo, up 46% from the 2011’s figure with a 107-percent spike in suction cargo volume, to 1.2 million tons. Handling of general cargo slid 4 percent to 174 tons. There was also a 47-percent gain in the segment of oil products to1.5 million tons.


Coal shipments jumped by 3.5 times, to 939 tons, handling of Ro-Ro cargoes increased by 11%.

Port Ventspils traffic is up 15 percent to 28.5 million tons

Cargo traffic at the port of Ventspils in 2011 grew by 15% year-over-year, to 28.5 million tons, the Ventspils Port Authority statistics said.


Handling of bulk cargo as well as general goods rose by 25% to 10.9 million tons and 2.5 million tons, respectively. Transshipment of liquid bulk increased by 7% to 14,984,000 tons. The volume includes 14.5 million tons of petroleum products (+8%). Shipments of coal soared 81%, of fertilizers – by 18% to 3 million tons. In November 2011, Port of Ventspils throughput increased by 23 percent.
In 2011, the port saw a 46-percent gain in Ro-Ro cargo, to 2 million tons.

Ventspils Port's nine-month throughput up 12 percent to over 21 m tons
Cargo traffic at Ventspils Port rose 12 percent year-over-year, to 21.21 million tons, the Port Authority said.

In the reporting period liquid bulk volume increased by 9 percent from a year earlier, to 11.35 million tons. Handling of bulk cargo was up 13 percent to 7.95 million tons, while general cargo volume surged by 30 percent to 1.92 million tons, the Port Authority's spokesperson Inga Ievina told LETA.

The nine-month gain was fueled by increased transshipment of coal, oil products and fertilizer. The port's coal throughput surged by 72 percent from January-September 2011, to 4.64 million tons, shipments of oil products grew by 11 percent to 10.95 million tons. Handling of mineral fertilizer rose 4 percent 1.99 million tons of mineral fertilizers.

In Jan-Sept., the port handled 1.39 million tons of rolling cargo, a 48 percent surge year-on-year.

In September, Ventspils Port loaded/unloaded 2.24 million tons of cargoes, a 43.5 percent growth from last year's figures. Monthly volume of liquid bulk totaled 1.17 million tons, 849,000 tons of bulk cargo and 213,000 tons of general cargo.
