Evergreen updates its services

The Evergreen shipping line has upgraded its feeder service to Malta to a weekly call. The service is operated by two vessels of 1,000 containers capacity each and operates on a rotation basis covering Piraeus, Malta, Misurata and Benghazi, Times Of Malta reports.
“Through this service Evergreen is providing the Malta trade with an excellent transit time for imports from North Europe and at the same time with a weekly direct service between Malta and Libya. Cargos from North Europe will now have a transit time of 13 days from UK ports and 15 days from North European ports. The weekly connection to the Libya ports of Benghazi and Misurata coupled with very competitive freight rates gives a unique direct service for both the Tripoli area (via Misurata) and for Benghazi with a direct call,” a statement by MBL Shipping Agency, local agents for Evergreen Line said.

Piraeus container volume almost doubles in 2011
Piraeus Port Authority SA (PPA) (PPA), operator of Greece’s largest port, said the number of containers handled at the harbor in 2011 almost doubled from the previous year, Bloomberg reports. The port handled just over 1.68 million so-called twenty- foot-equivalent units last year, up from 878,083 in 2010, the authority said in a statement late yesterday on its website.
Of the containers offloaded at the port in 2011, PPA handled 500,133 at the Pier I terminal, a more than three-fold increase from 2010, while Piraeus Container Terminal SA, the Greek unit of Cosco Pacific Ltd, processed 1.18 million containers at the port’s Pier II terminal, a rise of 73 percent, the authority said.
Greece plans to sell its 74.5 percent stake in PPA this year as part of a state asset sale and real-estate redevelopment program.

CMA CGM adds Piraeus call

CMA CGM will add a call at Greece’s Port of Piraeus this month to its Epic service from North Europe to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East, the Journal of Commerce reported.

The Marseilles-based carrier said Friday the new call is aimed at the growing demand by Turkish shippers for connections to markets in the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East.
The Piraeus call will enable the Epic service to pick up cargo transshipped from feeder ships loaded at the Turkish ports of Hayderpasa Gebze Avcilar and Gemlik.

Turkish containers transshipped at Piraeus will reach Jebel Ali in a transit time of between17 and 19 days.

The new rotation of the Epic Service is: Southampton, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre, Piraeus, Khor Fakkan, Jebel Ali, Port Qasim, Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Jeddah, Malta, Tangiers and back to Southampton.

The first vessel to start the rotation from North Europe is the CMA CGM Rossini, which is scheduled to call Piraeus on May 31.

Piraeus Port to cut docking fees for all ship types
Piraeus Port Authority SA, operator of Greece’s largest harbour, said it will provide docking services for less than a private company is currently charging at the port, Bloomberg reports.
Piraeus Port will cut the docking fee for cruise ships to 125 euros ($177.3) from 250 euros and for cargo vessels to 75 euros from 150 euros, the authority said today in an e-mailed statement. The authority will charge passenger ferry companies between 200 and 950 euros a month, depending on the size of the ship, rather than a fee each time a vessel arrives or leaves the port, according to the statement.
The number of cruise ship arrivals scheduled for 2011, based on information from cruise ship operators, is set to rise to 962 from 823 last year, the authority said March 3.
