Maersk cuts calls to Port Said, Valencia, Algeciras on Asia-Med services
Danish Maersk Line, the world's largest container carrier, has announced it will cancel calls at Mediterranean ports on its Asia-Med services during the coming winter holiday season, Shippingazette reports.

On its AE1 loop, a call at Port Said will be cancelled on one sailing, reported American Shipper, adding that on the AE2 string, three sailings will omit calls at Valencia, and on AE6 service, Algeciras will be skipped on one sailing.

The skipped calls will be covered by sailings on other Maersk Asia-Med routes.

APL updates on disruption at Port Said East Terminal (SCCT)
APL has informed its customers about operational disruption at Egypt's Port Said East Terminal (SCCT) and measures the company is undertaking to solve the problem.

The Terminal crane productivity has decreased by nearly 30% as a result of a number of factors impacting labour efficiency. This decline in productivity has resulted in a backlog of vessels. As of 29 July, it was reported that 10 vessels were at anchor awaiting a berth at SCCT. Since line haul vessels have been given priority for a berth, feeder vessels have been disproportionately impacted.

"We are experiencing feeder waiting times in excess of seven days in some cases," the Company said in its press release.

APL is currently adjusting its line haul network to shift a number of vessels away from SCCT, thereby freeing up berths to improve feeder access.

"We are securing additional feeders on an ad hoc basis to maximize the velocity of our recovery efforts.We apologize for network disruptions at our Egypt hub terminal. We will provide progress reports as we work to remedy the situation."

OOCL launches North Europe – East Med / Indian Subcontinent service
OOCL will begin a new service from the UK and Ireland to the Eastern Mediterranean and Indian Subcontinent on May 2nd, Eyefortransport reports.
Port Said East will be served on a direct basis from Southampton, and from there onward service will be provided to Ashdod and Haifa (Israel) and Istanbul-Ambarli, Izmir and Mersin (Turkey).
The Indian Subcontinent direct calls will be Port Qasim (Pakistan) and Nhava Sheva and Mundra (India).

CMA CGM upgrades EPIC service
CMA CGM is upgrading its EPIC service between India, Pakistan, the Middle East and North Europe that sees five ports served directly. A new westbound call at Port Said as of March 30, 2011 will significantly improve transit times to the eastern Mediterranean, reducing the trip by four days to Lattakia in Syria and Istanbul, six days to Mersin and seven days to Beirut. Eight 5,700 teu ships are to be used on the route.
“The addition of a call in Port Said is the main asset of this new service and will significantly reduce our transit times to the eastern Mediterranean. This new configuration meets the growing demand of our Indian and Pakistani customers exporting agricultural, textile and chemical products, as well as refrigerated goods, to markets in the Middle East, Black Sea and Turkey”, said Christophe de La Ferrière, senior manager Indian Subcontinent / Europe lines.

Walkout stops operations at Egypt's Port Said East
The workers at Port Said East in Egypt staged a strike, which halted operation activities at the port, APL press release said. It is still unclear when the port resumes its operations.

APL has developed plans to work around the disruption to cargo flow. In view of the port strike, cargoes on board vessels meant for transshipment or discharge at Port Said East, during this period are being re-routed to Malta, Salalah or Djibouti. The shipping company said it would arrange for service recovery once normal cargo operations resume.

APL restores operations at Egypt's ports
Operations at some of the ports in Egypt affected by recent events in the country have been restored, APL press release said.

As of now, the ports of Sokhna and Damietta have been fully operating, but some delays still may occur at Damietta.

Operation at the port of Said (West) is at 50% normalcy now with some vessel berthing backlog. Port Said (East) – operation is at 25 percent normalcy with some vessel berthing backlog.

APL is planning to recover cargo previously diverted to Malta and Salalah, the company said adding that this will likely take a few weeks to accomplish.

APL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping and related businesses.
