Weihai Haida Ferry orders MAN Diesel & Turbo propulsion package
Weihai Haida Ferry Co., operating in NE China, has placed an order for a 2,200-passenger/1100-lane-metre Ropax ferry featuring a complete propulsion package manufactured by MAN Diesel & Turbo, the German company said on Thursday.
Weihai Haida is the exclusive operator on the route between the major cities of Weihai and Dalian on opposite sides of the Bohai strait in NE China where it undertakes a Ropax service. The company currently has two vessels in its fleet operating on the route – the ‘Xin Shen Shen’ and ‘Shen Shen 1’ – with the former shortly due to exit service.
The newbuilding will be constructed at local Huanghai shipyard and will be called ‘Shen Shen 2’. It will feature a twin-screw propulsion plant comprising two well-proven MAN 9L32/40 (IMO Tier-II compliant) four-stroke engines manufactured by MAN Diesel & Turbo in Augsburg (Germany), two Renk single-reduction gearboxes with PTO shaft to drive alternators, and two MAN CP propellers using the new, high efficiency type Alpha VBS1020 Mk 5 design. Additionally, the Alphatronic 2000 has been designated as propulsion control system. MAN Diesel & Turbo Frederikshavn (Denmark) will support the integration of the full propulsion package. The new ferry will be capable of carrying its 2,200 passengers at a design speed of 18 knots.
Along with the optimised propulsion package, Weihai Haida has also ordered engine spare-parts from MAN PrimeServ, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s after-sales division.
Weihai Haida is a new customer for MAN Diesel & Turbo but the company has a long-term relationship with Huanghai shipyard that has seen the construction of eight Ropax ferries with MAN four-stroke propulsion systems to date. The shipyard has also ordered 34 MAN Diesel & Turbo license-built, two-stroke engines in this time.
The regional increase in tourism is an important driver for the order of the ferry. The city of Weihai and its hinterland has a fast-developing and attractive seaside location and is currently experiencing growing numbers of tourists from northern China, especially from around the Dalian area.
Augsburg-headquartered MAN Diesel & Turbo founded in 1758 is now the world market leader for large diesel engines for use in ships and power stations, and is one of the three leading suppliers of turbo machines. The company employs some 12,500 persons, and is represented in more than 150 countries. Vale giant ore ship makes maiden arrival in China
China has received the first of Vale's giant iron ore vessels, industry sources said on Wednesday, a major breakthrough for the Brazilian miner after months of uncertainty over the fleet's access to the world's top steelmaker, Reuters reports.
Top iron ore exporter Vale is spending billions of dollars to build the world's biggest dry bulk ships to cut the cost of shipping the steelmaking ingredient to China, but until now had failed to gain Beijing's approval for the six vessels already on the water to even stop at a Chinese port.
Reuters Freightviews and independent shipping data showed Vale's vessel, Berge Everest, anchored off China's Dalian port with its draught measurements indicating it was fully loaded with cargo.
Industry sources said there was 350,000 tonnes of iron ore onboard, but it was not clear whether the vessel had clearance to unload.
Vale officials in China and Brazil declined to comment on Wednesday. A spokeswoman for the ship's owner, Singapore-based Berge Bulk, and Dalian port officials were not immediately available for comment.
Vale's fleet has faced stiff opposition from influential Chinese shipowners and steelmakers, who fear the ships are a Trojan Horse which the miner will use to monopolise both the shipping and iron ore markets at their expense.
"Vale's ships won't break any company, but it will be damaging," said a Singapore-based ship broker said on Wednesday.
Vale's first mega bulk vessel, Vale Brasil, was forced to turn around in the Indian Ocean on its maiden voyage in June after the Chinese government failed to provide permission for the ship to dock at Dalian. It went to Taranto, Italy, instead.
SHIPOWNERS
The arrival of the Berge Everest could not come at a worse time for Chinese shipowners, already struggling with a severe downturn in the industry driven by rock bottom freight rates, high bunker fuel prices and an oversupply of ships.
Things got so bad that China's top shipping conglomerate COSCO Group and Grand China Logistics were forced to temporarily halt payments to foreign ship owners earlier this year to renegotiate better terms.
China Shipowners Association urged Beijing this month not to rush into any decision on Vale's ships, warning that they have not been thoroughly tested and any oil leak from one could be catastrophic.
"The China Shipowners Association has been aware of this since Monday and now is trying to get a clear picture of the whole story," an industry source said.
One of Vale's vessels, Vale Beijing, became severely damaged while preparing to set sail on its maiden voyage earlier this month.
Vale is planning to build a fleet of 35 giant vessels, each with capacity of around 400,000 tonnes, to feed top importer China's growing demand for the commodity. The firm aims to ship around 130 million tonnes, or 40 percent of its total iron ore output, to China next year.
China is expected to import a total of around 720 million tonnes of iron ore in 2012, up from 679 million tonnes this year, according to a Reuters poll. China consumes over a billion tonnes per year of iron ore.
Shipping data this week initially showed the Berge Everest destined for a port in the Philippines after a brief stop earlier in Singapore.
"For the past few days, it was drifting around the Phillippines area awaiting instructions," said T.S. Ang, technical executive at BW Fleet Management, which manages the crew and safety operations on Berge Everest. He was unable to confirm the ship's current location.

China's Dongjiakou Port plans to build two additional port terminals to handle Vale's growing fleet of mega iron ore carriers, the world's largest dry bulk ships, a port official told Reuters.
Dongjiakou Port, along with ports in Majishan and Dalian, is among the few Chinese ports that will be able to receive the Brazilian miner's huge dry bulk ships, also known as Valemaxes.
Dongjiakou Port has already started trial operations at its existing terminal, which received government approval in May.
"We have received around 40-50 small carriers already, including one 300,000-tonne vessel that was not fully loaded," said the official, who wished not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media.
"But we still have some technical problems to resolve before we can receive the Valemaxes."
The timeline for the two additional facilities, which will be able to handle ships as large as 388,000-tonnes, was uncertain as they must still receive government approval and one terminal remained under study, the official said.
Earlier this week, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, China's planning agency, said domestic ports were not yet ready to receive Vale's mega carriers due to a few "small issues".
The Brazilian mining firm has received at least six of the huge ships this year, according to Reuters Freight Views, sending them to Italy and Oman as it awaits the lifting of travel restrictions to its biggest market, China.
Among the issues still unresolved is how the ships will be safely guided into the ports.
The Dongjiakou port, which aims to be an international commodities and energy distribution centre, also plans to build two 450,000-tonne oil terminals in the near future.

Shanghai based start-up, Hainan PO Shipping, will expand its transpacific service by adding a north and central China loop to its west coast in December, adding to its weekly service from south China to Long Beach, Shippingazette reported.
Hainan also runs a feeder network serving Tianjin and Dalian, and provides intermodal rail links from Long Beach and Oakland to inland points.
While other new carriers have discontinued loops this year, Hainan is alone in continuing to offer weekly services with ships in the 3,000-TEU range.
Hainan's new rotation will be Qingdao, Lianyungang, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Long Beach, Oakland and back to Qingdao.
