San Francisco Bay Ferry to launch East Bay service
San Francisco Bay Ferry's service between the East Bay and South San Francisco will launch on Monday, June 4, giving commuters an alternative to traffic on the Bay Bridge and along Highway 101. Commuters will have the option to enjoy a comfortable and scenic 40- to 50-minute ride aboard sleek, modern vessels equipped with free WiFi and a other amenities. Fares are free for the first week of service, MarineLog reports.
The East Bay-South San Francisco service – the first new water transit route on the Bay in nearly 20 years – will operate Monday through Friday during peak commute periods, with three morning departures from Alameda Main Street and Oakland's Jack London Square, and two evening return departures from South San Francisco’s new Oyster Point Ferry Terminal.
“The June 4 maiden voyage of the East Bay to South San Francisco ferry service marks a new chapter in water transportation on San Francisco Bay,” said Nina Rannells, Executive Director of San Francisco Bay Ferry. “Our vision for the future of transportation around the Bay Area includes a robust ferry system, starting with this important step in serving the vibrant and growing employer base in South San Francisco. In addition to providing an alternative to our increasingly congested roadways, this service ensures emergency access in the event of a natural disaster.”
The two vessels serving the route carry up to 149 passengers at a top speed of 25 knots. A one-way adult fare for the East Bay-South San Francisco route will be $7.00. Seniors, disabled, and youth (5-12) are $3.50. Clipper cards, credit cards and cash are accepted.

Princess Cruises to base ship year round in San Francisco
Princess Cruises announced today that for the first time it will base a ship in San Francisco year round, beginning in May 2013. The extensively renovated Grand Princess will first offer a series of Alaska cruises during the summer months from the “City by the Bay,” followed by a schedule of Hawaiian Islands, Mexico and the California Coast sailings during the fall 2013 to spring 2014 season, Cruise Industry News reports.
Last year the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess underwent the largest drydock in Princess Cruises history, adding a host of new features so that passengers will enjoy the same onboard experience as offered by the line’s other newer ships.
“Princess has been cruising from San Francisco nearly as long as our company has been in operation, so we have a rich history with the city, and we are the leading cruise line homeporting there,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president. “Our Bay Area passengers and travel agents have long been asking for more cruise options from San Francisco and our new year-round schedule with Grand Princess will now give them a great selection of itinerary choices, plus the benefit of sailing on a ship that offers our signature features and amenities.”
During the 2013-14 season Grand Princess will sail roundtrip from San Francisco to:
Alaska – Grand Princess’ first Alaska season features 10-day Inside Passage sailings. The ship will offer 13 voyages featuring the stunning scenery of Glacier Bay National Park or Tracy Arm, with calls at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria. Cruises depart between May 10 and September 7, 2013.
Mexico – Grand Princess will offer two sailings on a new 10-day itinerary to Mexico, featuring two new ports for Princess – Loreto and La Paz, both in Baja California. Passengers will also enjoy calls at Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. Sailings depart on September 17, 2013 and March 5, 2014.
California Coastal – An increasingly popular Princess itinerary, Grand Princess will take passengers to Santa Barbara, Los Angeles (Long Beach), San Diego, and Ensenada. Four sailings are offered on September 27 and October 19, 2013; plus March 15 and April 6, 2014.
Hawaiian Islands – Passengers can explore each of the main Hawaiian islands on this 15-day voyage to the Big Island (Hilo), Oahu (Honolulu), Kauai (Nawiliwili), Maui (Lahaina), and Ensenada. Grand Princess will offer 12 departures between October 4, 2013 and April 28, 2014.

Some of the major work items include dry-docking and undocking the ship, repairing interior decks, structural repairs, overhauling the main diesel generators, and inspecting and refurbishing the propeller shaft and stern tube. The ship's primary mission is to provide fuel, ammunition, and dry and refrigerated stores to support Navy ships at sea, enabling them to remain underway for extended periods. This contract includes options, which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $14,321,064. Work will be performed in San Francisco, Calif., and is expected to be completed by May 28. Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured, with one offer received.

A four-alarm fire that engulfed a vacant warehouse at a one-time Navy shipyard is under control after sending up plumes of smoke visible across the San Francisco Bay area, AP reports.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the fire erupted around 10 a.m. Sunday on Mare Island near Vallejo.
Vallejo Fire Department Chief Paige Meyer said firefighters had tamed the blaze by 12:30 p.m. No one was injured.
Meyer says firefighters will monitor the smoldering ruin to make sure the fire does not re-ignite.
The 150,000-square-foot wooden structure at the defunct Mare Island Naval Shipyard was scheduled to be demolished sometime in the next year.
The Vallejo Fire Department says homeless people sometimes stayed in the warehouse and a campfire may have started the blaze, though no cause has been determined.

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien (Pier 45) is about to begin one of the most extensive preservation efforts in the last two decades. This landmark World War II Liberty ship, moored at Fisherman's Wharf, is a living museum on the water. Built in 1943, the O'Brien is one of only two remaining fully functional Liberty ships and a premier San Francisco attraction.
On January 23rd, the O'Brien will head to Pier 70 for twenty-eight days "on the blocks" where the ship will undergo the first stages of her facelift.
"This will be the first time in 20 years that we take her down to the bare metal on the hull and really prime and paint her," said Captain Patrick Moloney, Port Captain and Master. "Our ship is 68 years old, but when she returns from drydock she'll look and act like a 20 year old. We are preparing for the O'Brien's immediate future."
In 2013, America's Cup will come to San Francisco, offering new opportunities for the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, including hospitality for spectators and media looking for a unique vantage point from which to observe this historic event.
"We can take spectators out on the water where the race is held," said Dennis Koller, Executive Director of the O'Brien. "We offer a viewing platform that is mobile, stable, and has height. The perfect place from which to watch the America's Cup races."

Logistics Plus has acquired Horizon Logistics, the 3PL subsidiary division of Horizon Lines, Eyefortransport reports. Under terms of the agreement, Horizon Lines has transferred the majority of its Horizon Logistics staff based in Irving (Texas) as well as its operations in Lexington (North Carolina) and San Francisco (California) to Logistics Plus.
This follows Horizon Lines' announcement in February that it had decided to divest its Logistics business.
The acquisition expands Logistics Plus' portfolio of services, including international ocean transportation, airfreight forwarding, intermodal transportation management, distribution, warehousing and fulfilment, trucking and expedited delivery.
Horizon Logistics network includes warehouses, terminals and offices in Lexington and Dallas.
