Massive outage in US Southwest and Mexico
A massive power outage leaved more than two million people without electricity in the US states of California and Arizona, and in neighbouring Mexico, BBC reports.

Five million people were without power on Thursday, with many likely to remain out of service for another day or two.

There was traffic chaos. California's two nuclear reactors were forced to shut down. San Diego was the worst affected city, and all outbound flights from the city's airport were cancelled.

Extreme heat is believed to have been a contributing factor, officials said.

Port of San Diego celebrates new cruise ship terminal

The Port of San Diego will be celebrating the grand opening of its new cruise ship terminal by hosting an open house at its new pavilion and pier.
According to the port, the celebration will include a blessing ceremony, maritime exhibits, and music performances.
"We have been waiting a long time for this moment," said Robert Valderrama, chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. "The new pavilion will serve as a welcome center for the many cruise passengers sailing into or leaving this beautiful city, and locals and visitors alike who may be attending one of the special events or festivals that we envision for the pier and event center."
The $28 million port pavilion is designed and built to reduce water and energy usage.
Cruise ships berthing at the pavilion will use shore-side electrical power which will result in less pollution from a ship's diesel-burning engines while at berth, according to the port.
Celebrations for the new pavilion will commence on December 18, 2010.

Carnival Splendor to be towed to San Diego

Carnival Cruise Lines has changed its plans about where to tow the disabled Carnival Splendor. In an announcement made at 8.15 EST, Carnival said that given the ship's speed and current position, it has decided to take the vessel to San Diego where it is expected to arrive late Thursday. Additionally, Carnival is in the process of making all the necessary hotel and flight arrangements for guests. If the ship is unable to maintain sufficient speed under tow, it is possible that Carnival could revert to the previous plan and dock in Ensenada, Mexico.

At approximately 6 am Monday morning (U.S. Pacific Standard Time), a fire was detected in the aft engine room aboard the cruise ship Carnival Splendor. The fire was extinguished. There were no injuries to guests or crew. The ship has been operating on auxiliary generators and engineers have been unable to restore additional power to the vessel. Thus far, one tug boat has reached the ship and has begun towing with additional tugs en route to expedite the vessel's return.

Last night, the ship's engineers were able to restore toilet service to most cabins and all public bathrooms, as well as cold running water. Currently several key hotel systems, including air conditioning, hot food service and telephones, are not available. The ship's crew continues to actively work to restore other services.

Carnival says guests are able to move about the ship and food and beverage service, along with some shipboard programming, including children's activities and entertainment, are being provided.
