Mitsubishi mulls Riga, Tallinn terminals for auto parts transshipment

Mitsubishi is considering the ports of Riga (Latvia) or Tallinn (Estonia) as a transshipment hub for delivery of spare parts to the carmaker’s assembly plant based in Russian Kaluga. The company plans to ramp up its facilities production in Russia. Mitsubishi is going to select the port within two weeks, TV-3 Nekā personīga reports.

Kaliga-based PSMA Rus is a joint venture held 70% by PSA Peugeot Citroen and 30% by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. From April 2010, the plant has been assembling SKD kits of Peugeout, Citroen and Mitsubishi. In 2012, PSMA Rus will launch full-cycle production, the company’s workforce will be increased to 3500 people.

Port of Riga throughput grows 11.8 percent in 2011

Cargo traffic at Free Port of Riga in 2011 increased year-over-year by 11.8% to 34.07 million tons, the Port Authority said.


Transshipment of coal increased by 16.9% from a year before, to 13.49 million tons. Handling of oil products rose 15.1% to 7.51 million tons. Shipment of timber cargo shrank by 8% to 2.67 million tons, of ore - decreased by 17% to 634,600 tons, of wood pellets - by 13.8% to 1.05 million tons.

Chemicals volume rose by 24.9% to 1.71 million tons, handling of building materials jumped by 54% to 607,400 tons, of scrap metal - increased by 26.5% to 511,800 tons.


Riga port’s container throughput grew by 17.8% to 243.630 TEUs.


In 2011, passenger traffic rose 9.9% to 839,712 people, including 28,127 passengers from cruise ships (+8.5%).

Freeport of Riga traffic rises 12.4 percent to 28.14 million tons

Cargo traffic at the port of Riga in January-October 2011 totaled 28.14 million tons, up 12.4% over the same period last year, the Port Authority said.


The ten-month throughput increase was driven largely by a 23.5-percent growth in crude oil transshipments, to 6.3 million tons (+1.2). The port demonstrated a 13.1 percent gain in the segment of bulk cargo. Year-to-date volume of coal handled at the port terminal has increased year-over-year by 15 percent to 11 million tons.


Shipments of fertilizer rose 21.9 percent from a year earlier, to 1.4 million tons. The Port Authority also reported an increase in the segment of grain, ferroalloys, building materials, scrap metal and sugar. The volume of handled peat, wood chips, metal was down from last year’s figure.
The ten-month volume of general cargo inched up 0.1% year-on-year, while containerized cargo traffic rose 19.1% to 2.6 million tons.


Riga port’s passenger traffic in the reporting period increased by 80,000 people to 740,420. The Port Authority expects to handle about 850,000 passengers by the end of the year.

Pella Shipyard completes Sfinksa tug tests for Riga port

JSC Leningrad Shipyard ‘Pella’ completed sea trials, pull and escort tests of the tugboat Sfinksa of Project 16,609 ordered by Freeport of Riga, the shipbuilding firm said.


Test results confirmed the stability and maneuverability of the vessel. The ship is ready to set out for the port of destination.


Ship’s main characteristics: length overall - 28,5 m, breadth - 9.5 m, depth - 4.8 m, draft overall - 3,5 m, operational speed - about 12 knots, bollard pull is 47.7 tons, holding force - 49.9 tons. The vessel is powered by two main Caterpillar engines 3516V 15 kW each.


In August 2011 Pella Shipyard won the tender as the only bidder and was awarded the tug boat contract from Freeport of Riga. The firm’s winning bid was EUR 6.35 million.


Shipyard Pella was founded in 1950. In 1992 the company was privatized as Pella Holding Company comprising of head office and a number of subsidiaries. The firm specializes in construction of tugboats for Russian customers.

Latvia ports throughput grows 13.7 percent in Q3

Cargo traffic at the ports of Latvia in the third quarter of 2011 totaled 16.6 million tons, up 13.7% over the same period of last year, Baltic Course reports citing the country’s statistics service.

During the reporting period, the volume of oil products loaded to tankers increased by 16.9 percent as compared to last year’s figure, to 4.9 million tons, of coal – by 43.7 percent to 4.8 million tons.

Cargo throughput of Free Port of Riga in the third quarter rose 7.8% to 8.4 million tons, of Ventspils port - by 26.4% to 6.7 million tons, of Liepaja port – by 6.7% to 1.2 million tons.

Port of Riga throughput grows 12.8 percent to 25.17 million tons

Freight volume handled at the port of Riga in January-September 2011 increased by 12.8% compared to the same period of last year, to 25.17 million tons, the Port Authority statistics said.



In Jan-Sept., petroleum products transshipments rose by 26.6 percent year-on-year, to 5.81 million tons, of coal - by 15.3 percent to 9.82 million tons. Handling of timber cargo dropped by 10.6 percent to 2.04 million tons. Shipments of chemical cargo increased by 21.3% to 1.25 million tons, of ore - down 0.4% to 472,900 tons, of wood pellets - shrank by 19.4% to 761,300 tons. The volume of building materials surged by 30.1% to 395,000 tons, of scrap metal - by 54% to 415.7 thousand tons.



Container traffic grew by 20% to 222,710 TEUs. Passenger traffic rose 11.8% to 688,260 people. Cruise vessels transported 123,218 tourists (+8.7%).
