Port of Helsinki throughput flat in Jan-Apr, at 3.3 mln tons

Freight traffic passing through the Port of Helsinki in January-April 2012 did not change compared to 2011’s figures, reaching 3.3 million tons, the Port Authority said.

The four-month volume of imports climbed 2% to 1.7 million tons, exports - by 3% to 1.6 million tons. Passenger traffic for the period increased by 6% to 2.9 million people.

In April, shipments of cargo through the port decreased by 8% to 833,000 tons. Imports remained flat on the 2011 year’s numbers, at 451,000 tons, exports fell 15% to 382,000 tons. The volume of passenger traffic grew by 8% to 854,000 people.

Port of Helsinki is a premier port of Finland and the largest passenger port, which handles 77 percent of all passenger traffic of the country. Helsinki ranks the third Baltic Sea passenger port. In 2011, the port saw 10 million passengers.

Port of Helsinki traffic volume rises 2 percent in Jan-Mar

Cargo throughput at the Port of Helsinki in the first quarter of 2011 grew 2% compared to January-March 2011, to 2.5 million tons, the Port Authority statistics said.


During the period passenger traffic increased by 5% to 2.1 million people.


In March, shipments of cargo rose 3% to 903,000 tons. Imports totaled 464,000 tons, exports – 438,000 tons. Passenger traffic grew by 12% to 773,000 people.


Port of Helsinki is a premier port of Finland and the largest passenger port, which handles 77 percent of all passenger traffic of the country. Helsinki ranks the third Baltic Sea passenger port . In 2011, the port saw 10 million passengers.

Finland debuts first hybrid boat
Electric motors are slowly gaining ground on power boats. Hybrid cars have been on world markets for 15 years, but the combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor is only just now making a breakthrough among boaters, Yle reports.

The first commercial Finnish hybrid boat is a nine-metre cabin cruiser, produced in Kuopio, that runs on a diesel engine and an electric motor. Using the diesel, the boat has a cruising speed of 16 knots, around 30 km/h, and with the electric motor, close to 4 knots, about 7 km/h. It can run for up to nine hours on its batteries.

The boat's batteries can be charged up at dockside, and are recharged when the diesel engine is in operation. The boat is also fitted with roof-top solar panels that provide some of the charge. The lithium batteries weigh around 200 kg and boost the price of the vessel by tens of thousands of euros.

The Helsinki Boat Show opened at the Helsinki Fair Centre on Sunday.

Unitized cargo throughput of the Port of Helsinki in 2011 rose 3% year-on-year to 10.1 million tonnes, the Port Authority statistics said.

In the reporting period, the Port of Helsinki saw a 4-percent gain in inbound cargo, to 5.2 million tons and a 2-percent growth in outbound cargo, to 4.9 million tones.

Port of Helsinki is Finland's premier port, specializing in handling unitized cargo, containers, etc. Cargo traffic at the Port of Helsinki consists mainly of Finnish foreign trade imports and exports. The core of the cargo traffic consists of goods transported in containers, trailer trucks, trailers and similar units.

Port of Helsinki passenger traffic tops record 10 million

Year-to-date passenger traffic at the Port of Helsinki has exceeded 10 million people, the Port Authority statistics said. This is the record high throughout the port’s history.

The tenth million passenger was named an Estonian teacher Irina Reidla, who arrived in Helsinki on board the Tallink ferry on December 20.

In 1997, the port of Helsinki handled 8 million passengers. Two years later passenger traffic at the port totaled more than 9 million people.

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard to build innovative emergency response vessel
Arctech Helsinki Shipyard has been awarded a contract to build a multipurpose emergency and rescue vessel for Russian Ministry of Transport. The contract has been awarded together with Shipyard Yantar JSC. The value of the order is aapproximately Euros 76 million.

The project will start immediately and the vessel will be delivered to the customer in December 2013. The hull of the vessel will be built by Shipyard Yantar, which is one of the shipyards belonging to United Shipbuilding Corporation, the Russian part owner of Arctech. The outfitting and finalizing of the vessel will be done by Arctech in Helsinki.

“This order re-confirms Arctech Helsinki Shipyard’s world class position in the design and production of the most advanced and sophisticated ice-breaking and arctic tonnage. This order is very important for Arctech as it is a completely new design and it will give us a good workload during 2012 and 2013”, said Esko Mustamäki, Managing Director of Arctech Helsinki Shipyard.

Archtech claims that the new and unique multipurpose emergency/rescue icebreaking vessels will use a completely new type of oil spill combat technology.

The design of the vessel is based on ARC 100 concept, which has been developed by Aker Arctic Technology for Arctech Helsinki Shipyard.

The vessel has a patented oblique design with asymmetric hull and three azimuthing propulsors, which allow the vessel to operate efficiently ahead, astern and obliquely (sideways).

The vessel can proceed on a continuous mode in 1.0 m thick level ice both ahead and astern and in oblique mode she will be able to generate 50m wide channel in 0.6m level ice.

The vessel will be used in icebreaking operations and sea towing of vessels and floating facilities and also features a very advanced oil recovery system suitable for operation even in heavy waves. The vessel measures 76.4m in length with a breadth of 20.5m. The three main diesel generator sets have the total power of 9MW. The total propulsion power is about 7 MW.

“Oil combat in ice conditions is one of the major challenges for the international oil industry. After many years of development work the oblique icebreaker concept represents a new approach for a solution”, said Mikko Niini, Managing Director of Aker Arctic.
