Bremen Fire-brigade and Police take delivery of Damen FFV

Damen Shipyards has recently delivered the ‘Bremen 1’ to the City of Bremen (Germany) to replace its 1975-built predecessor. Both the local police force and the fire brigade will use the Damen Fire Fighting Vessel 2406 (FFV) for emergency response. The police will patrol the Port of Bremen and the Weser River with the newbuild, the shipbuilding company's press release said.

The Bremen 1 measures 24m x 6m. Its three waterjetsand single bow thruster are largely responsible for the ship’s excellent manoeuvrability and generate a top-speed of 40 km/h. The FFV 2406 is equipped with a large fire pump, which has a capacity of 14,000 l/min at 10 bar. In addition, a second, smaller pump of 1,000 l/min is installed.

When extinguishing fires, the Bremen 1 uses mixture of water and foam. The foaming agent is stored in two 2,500 litre tanks and can be distributed to all or some of the vessel’s fire fighting monitors, two of which are supported by deck cranes. Other systems are a gas detection system and a self-protection water spray system, which can protect both vessel and crew from heat or fire.

The Damen FFV 2406 has ample space inside to storethe same additional equipment as is commonly used in fire trucks. Furthermore, the vessel is outfitted with a life-raft and a lifeboat, i.e. a high-speed RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat).

For its daily purpose, the Bremen 1 will be manned by a police crew, which is expanded with fire fighters in case of a fire. Both organisations will train together in order to form a perfect team for emergency response activities.

Bremen, Bremerhaven H1 cargo volume up 16.5 percent to 40m tonnes
The total ocean freight of the twin ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven grew 16.5 percent on the year to over 40 tonnes in the first six months of 2011 thanks to increased car exports handled by Bremerhaven, reported Handelsblatt.

The cars export in Bremerhaven jumped by around 35 percent to almost 968,000 units.

Container traffic at the ports grew 25 percent in annual terms to around three million TEUs.

Container traffic at Bremen/Bremerhaven hit a record high in April as the German twin ports continue to outpace growth at their North West European rivals, Journal of Commerce reports.The two ports handled 512,000 20-foot equivalent units in April, almost 20 percent higher than a year ago and 40,000 TEUs ahead of the previous record of 472,000 TEUs in April 2008, before the global economic crisis collapsed traffic.

Container traffic totaled 1.9 million TEUs in the first four months of the year, a 23.5 percent increase on the year-earlier period that is significantly higher than growth at Rotterdam, Antwerp and neighboring Hamburg.

Bremen/Bremerhaven box traffic jumped 24.9 percent in the first quarter to 1.4 million TEUs, closing the gap on Hamburg, Germany’s biggest port, which grew 18.2 percent to 2.1 million TEUs.

Bremerhaven, the larger of the two ports, boosted automotive shipments by 35.4 percent in April to 176,000 units.

This took traffic for the first four months of 2011 to 662,000 units, a 46.5 percent gain on the year-earlier period that consolidated its status as Europe’s biggest auto logistics hub.

Hapag-Lloyd to issue 500 mln bond in September

German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd plans to issue a bond worth around 500 million euros in September, a source told Reuters.

"We have to take advantage of the currently good market environment," a source close to the matter told Reuters after Hapag-Lloyd's supervisory board had approved the bond issue on Thursday.

HSH Nordbank [hsh.ul] and Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) are among the banks that will manage the bond issue, the source said.

Hapag-Lloyd and shareholder TUI declined to comment.

The shipper also aims to obtain a syndicated credit line of about 500 million euros.

Bremen: 25 Years of Container Traffic

During the past 25 years, containers have gained in importance, outstripping every other form of ocean transport. About 50% of all the general cargo handled in the major universal ports on the European North Sea coast is containerized. Most containers now in use worldwide are of the standardized 20 foot and 40 foot lengths. They can hold up to 30 tons of cargo. A broad range of specialized containers is available to carry almost any kind of goods. Transport experts predict that in the long run more than 90% of the general cargo transported worldwide is containerizable, indicating further growth in this field. This trend as been evident in the Ports of Bremen ever since the containerization first started.

In the mid-sixties, Bremen was one of the first ports in Europe to recognize the potential of container traffic, which Sea-Land had first started in the U.S. Sea-Land though, did not remain for long the only shipping line to convey cargo in containers. Other shipping companies recognized the advantages of this new system, and equipped their fleets appropriately. Nowadays, all notable shipping lines, unless they are specialized in some other form of transport, operate modern containerships in worldwide traffic.

The operations of the French fleet in the North Sea and the Baltic, with the preparations for defence along the coast and in the harbours and rivers of North Germany, will be illustrated with sketches by a Special Artist of this Journal, two of which are engraved for the present Number. The following is a portion of his descriptive correspondence:--

Few English travellers on the Continent visit the city of Bremen; yet there is not a city in Europe much better worth visiting than this north-west seaport of Hanover. From Emden there is railway communication direct through Oldenburg to Bremen. The country through which it passes is dull and uninteresting, but with a good deal of excellent loamy land, and some very poor, light, sandy soil, and, in the neighbourhood of Oldenburg, a great deal of wood. The railway enters Bremen by a fine iron-girder bridge over the river Weser; and on leaving the station the traveller is not a little surprised to find himself in the centre of a large square, laid out in beautiful gardens and surrounded by splendid hotels and private mansions. Bremen was formerly a fortified town, with huge ramparts, glacis, and moats. These have all been destroyed: scrap and counterscrap have disappeared, and all vestiges of the forms of the military works have been obliterated by the skill of the landscape-gardener. The altered slopes have been plated with ornamental trees, and the moat made into picturesque, many-shaped pools and canals, at times almost lost amongst the rich foliage on the banks, or else opening out into broad sheets of water, covered with waterfowl. Round the ornamental grounds thus formed are built the villas of the wealthy merchants of the city. Bremen is famed all over Germany for the wealth of its inhabitants and the pride and exclusiveness of the principal merchants. The villas that surround the ornamental grounds are of all sizes and styles; some are palaces, suitable only for a merchant-prince: others are exceedingly small; but all are built in the most perfect manner and with the most refined taste. The prevailing style is classical, leaning rather to the Greek than to the Roman. It is many years since the fortifications of Bremen were destroyed and the mounds planted, so that the timber is fine and well grown. This suburb of Bremen is more like what one would expect to find, but would not find, in some fine old Italian city on the shores of the Mediterranean, and certainly one would never expect to see it within a few miles of the shores of the cold North Sea.
