Two stalled ships hinder navigation at Big Port St. Petersburg

Two vessels became disabled while en route to Big Port St. Petersburg and hampered navigation on the approach channel, the Port Ice Operations HQ said.


As Harbour Master Peter Parinov said the breakdown was not related to ice conditions. As of now, one ship has been towed to the port, the second one - to the anchorage. The ships inspection will be conducted in accordance with the Paris Memorandum. Mr. Parinov has warned ship owners through maritime agents to check the technical condition of their vessels sailing to the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland.

Big Port of St. Pb bans non-ice-class vessels entry
Big Port of St. Petersburg has announced tighten requirements to the hulls of ships making calls at the port. The ice-class restrictions are effective from February 20, 2012, the port authorities said.
According to Harbour Master Peter Parinov, the decision followed the unfavorable weather and ice forecast for the region.

As of now, half of the available icebreakers here have been operating in the Gulf of Finland. Year-to-date, the fleet of icebreakers has escorted to open water 142 cargo ships, 75 - in Jan. and 67 – in February. The Big Port St. Pb’s Ice Operations HQ plans to make up icebreaking operations schedule for the day ahead, said Parinov.

Over the next two weeks the ice restrictions will be announced in other Russian ports of the Gulf of Finland.

Oil product exports from Vysotsk terminal drop 6% in January

Shipments of oil products through the terminal RPK Vysotsk "LUKOIL II» based in Leningrad region in January slid by 6% year-on-year to 907,000 tons, Vysotsk port provisional data said.


The monthly volume of diesel fuel exported from the terminal totaled 181,600 tons, of naphtha - 106,100 tons, of fuel oil – 619,000 tons. According to the February forecast shipments of petroleum products may reach 860,000 tons.


In 2011, Russia exported through the facility 9,687,600 tons of oil products (209 tankers), or about 20% below 2010’s numbers. Overall, given the volume delivered by rail transport to Vysotsk, the commodity shipment via RPK Vysotsk "LUKOIL II» shrank by19.5% year-over-year to 9,948,300 tons. During the period, the oil terminal handled 472 small and large-capacity tankers.

The nuclear-powered icebreaker ‘50 Years of Victory", which has just arrived in the Russian section of the Gulf of Finland starts providing ice-breaking assistance to oil tankers sailing to / from the port of Primorsk, the Authority of Big Port St. Petersburg said.


The nuclear-powered icebreaker owned by Atomflot was time-chartered by Rosmoport for 100 days to beef up a fleet of diesel-powered icebreakers ensuring safe navigation in the ice covered Gulf.

The Authority of Big Port St. Petersburg has published the ice bulletin and a map of ice cover prepared by “St. Petersburg Center of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring-Regional” (CHEM-R) in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland as of the end of January.

According to the bulletin intensive ice formation continues in the eastern part of the Gulf. A solid 15-30cm-thick shore-fast ice is observed in the waters of the Neva Bay with 10-20cm-thick close pack ice stretching to longitude of Moshchny Island. lighthouse and further to the west 8-10 nm there is open pack ice. There is sea ice crust at longitude of the island of Hogland
and first stages of ice formation.


To the west of Beresoviye Islands ice crust formation is observed, with very close pack ice, partially with pressure ridges at longitude of Sommers Island.



There is formation of 15-30cm-thick shore-fast ice in the area of Zelenogorsk and Sestroretsk.15-20cm-thick fast ice is also reported in the Vygorg Bay. In Proliv B'yërkëzund and in approaches to it – 10-20cm fast ice. In the bays of Luga and Koporskaya – 10-20cm-thick close pack ice (ranging from 8 to 10pts).

In the next few days frosty weather with rapid ice formation will persist in the eastern Gulf of Finland.

The thickness of ice is expected to increase by 2 or 4 cm. Formation of fast ice will continue in the Luga Bay, as well as frazil and grease ice to longitude of Viirit Islands.

In Proliv B'yërkëzund – fast ice of thickness of 10-15 cm. In the bays of Luga and Koporskaya – 5-15cm-thick close pack ice (5-7pts).

In the next few days frosty weather with intensive ice formation will persist in the eastern Gulf of Finland.

Fast ice edge will not change significantly, the report says, but the ice thickness may increase by 5 cm in the area. There will be more ice floes and sea ice crust at longitude of the island of Hogland.
