Hutchison Whampoa prices US$1 bln-bond deal
Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing, has priced its US$1 billion worth of two tranches of bonds in the U.S. credits markets, China Knowledge reports.

One tranche of US$500 million, five-year bonds, with a coupon rate of 3.50%, is priced to yield 3.216% or 250 basis points (bps) over comparable Treasurys. The other tranche of US$500 million, ten-year bonds, with a coupon rate of 4.625%, is priced to yield 4.659% or 285 bps over Treasurys, sources reported.

Earlier last month, Hong Kong-listed Hutchison Whampoa sold US$1.5 billion worth of unsecured five-year and ten-year bonds with the yield of 275 bps over Treasurys.

The five-year tranche was trading at 218 to 228 bps over Treasurys with a coupon rate of 3.50%, while the 10-year tranche was trading at 257 to 263 bps over Treasurys with a coupon rate of 4.625%.

Goldman Sachs and HSBC Holdings Plc<0005> have been assigned as bookrunners on the planned deal. Moody's Investors Service has rated the bonds A3, while ratings of A- were made by Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor's Ratings Services.

Sri Lanka's Aitken Spence sells port stake to China Merchants
Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence on Monday said it is selling its 30 percent stake in a $500 million port expansion joint venture to Hong Kong-based China Merchants Holdings, Reuters reports. Earlier this month, Spence pulled out of the joint venture with the state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and China Merchants Holdings due to high costs and unreasonable demands, officials have said.

Aitken Spence in a statement to the Colombo Stock Exchange said Sri Lanka's Board of Investment and the SLPA had approved the sale to China Merchant. The company did not disclose how much it was to be paid.

China Merchant upon completion of the transaction will own 85 percent of China International Container Terminal, the joint venture operating company set up to build the Colombo south terminal. SLPA will continue to hold 15 percent.

Port of Hong Kong box volumes grew 3 percent in 2011

Total container trade at the Port of Hong Kong in 2011 increased by 3 percent year-on-year to 24.4 million TEUs, the Port Authority statistics said.


The 12-month volume of export, import and empty containers includes throughput of Kwai Tsing, which grew by 1.9% to 17.41 million TEUs. Other terminals handled 6.98 mln TEUs (+ 5.9%).
In December container traffic increased by 1.4% from the same period in 2010, to 2.09 million TEUs. Kwai Tsing handled 1.49 mln TEUs, a 2.5-percent gain, while throughput of other terminals was down1.3% to 600,000 TEUs.


Port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest ports in the world. In 2010, Hong Kong port's container trade totaled 23.69 million TEUs. The port is able to handle 456,000 ships a year.

Hong Kong port's annual container handling volumes grew by 3% year-on-year to register 24.4m teu, according to figures from the port authority, Seatrade Asia Online reports. Container throughput of 2.09m teu moved in December rounded up the total volumes for last year, which saw 23.7m teu of volumes. Volumes moved in December last year rose 5% month-on-month from 1.99m teu in November.

Hong Kong urges speed reduction as fog season approaches
The Hong Kong Marine Department has warned vessel operators to reduce speed within the port of Hong Kong as the fog season approaches, Seatrade Asia Online reports. The fog season in Hong Kong usually starts in February and ends in April.
Francis Liu, director of marine at the department, reminded all masters, coxswains and persons-in-charge of vessels to make “significant speed reductions in restricted visibility.”
Liu added that over the past few years, serious or fatal marine accidents involving various types of vessels have occurred at different locations in Hong Kong and in nearby waters.
Investigations into the causes of these accidents revealed that most of them were due to inadequate safety preparations or contingency measures.

CNC and Hainan Pan Ocean launch south east Asia loop from Tianjin
A new shipping service, provided by CMA CGM unit CNC Line together with Hainan Pan Ocean Shipping, was launched from the Port of Tianjin, raising the number of south east Asia loops from the port to 12, Xinhua reports.

Three ships, averaging 2,000 TEU, have been deployed on the weekly service rotating through Tianjin, Qingdao, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Shekou, Manila, Hong Kong, Ningbo, Dalian and back to Tianjin.
