Port of Seattle boxes volume down 1.8 percent
Container traffic at the Port of Seattle in November fell 1.8 percent year-over-year, as a 6.1 percent decrease in exports offset a 2 percent rise in imports, the Journal of Commerce reported.

Loaded imports declined 5.9 percent and loaded exports rose 1.8 percent in the same period, according to port statistics. Container traffic at the Washington port is down 7.3 percent year-over-year in the first 11 months of 2011, largely because loaded container import traffic fell 15 percent in the same period.

In contract, container traffic at Washington’s second-largest port, Tacoma, was up 3.2 percent year-over-year in the first 11 months of 2011.

Kvichak secures order for two pilot boats
Kvichak Marine Industries, of Seattle, WA, has recently been awarded a contract to build two 50’ x 15.5’ pilot vessels for the Crescent River Port Pilots (CRPPA) of Louisiana, MarineLink reports.

The Crescent River Port Pilots operate on the Mississippi River between Pilot Town and New Orleans, LA. Designed by Kvichak Marine, the all-aluminum vessels will be powered by twin Detroit Diesel 60 series engines rated for 600 BHP coupled to Twin Disc MG5114SC marine gears. Hamilton 364 waterjets are the chosen propulsors. This combination allows for excellent maneuverability and a top speed of ~ 32 knots. These vessels have a Wing Hybrid fendering system and a roof boarding platform specifically designed for the CRPPA.

Delivery for the first vessel is scheduled for May 2012 and the second vessel in September 2012.

Containerized imports into the Port of Seattle plunged 22.6 percent in September over the same month a year ago as a tumultuous month at Pacific Northwest ports brought a meek showing in the midst of the peak shipping season.

Loaded inbound container volume of 60,809 20-foot equivalents container units also was down 8.2 percent from August to September, the second straight sequential decline at Seattle and lightest inbound container volume there since March.

Demand was stronger for exports, which grew 17.7 percent year-over-year in September. But Seattle's loaded container export volume also was flat compared to August.

The nearby Port of Tacoma saw its strongest month for containerized exports since March 2009, with a 20.2 percent year-over-year jump in outbound TEUs.

Tacoma also reported its busiest month for imports in a year and a 21.2 percent surge from August. But Tacoma¹s imports were down slightly on a year-over-year basis were 2 percent behind last year¹s total in the first nine months of 2011.

Both Seattle and Tacoma were closed for a workday in September when International Longshore and Warehouse workers left their jobs to take part in a protest at a Longview, Wash., grain terminal.

ILWU protest closes Ports of Seattle, Tacoma
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union effectively shut down the ports of Seattle and Tacoma on Thursday as workers joined fellow union members at the Port of Longview to protest the hiring of non-ILWU labor at a new grain terminal, the Journal of Commerce reports.

Port of Seattle spokesman Peter McGraw said the ILWU workers did not show up for work Thursday morning. IWLU spokesman Craig Merrilees confirmed that longshoremen from Seattle and Tacoma went to Longview to express solidarity with ILWU workers there.

The Associated Press reported that longshoremen in Longview overpowered security guards at the terminal, damaged rail cars and dumped grain on the ground. International Longshoremen's Association spokesman Jim McNamara said the East Coat union supports its West Coast brethren's actions.

The ILWU in Longview has been protesting for months the hiring of a non-ILWU contractor to staff the newly-built EGT grain export terminal. The Port of Longview and the ILWU have filed suit in federal court in Tacoma challenging the EGT actions. The port authority and the union charge that the ILWU contractually has the right to represent dock workers at the port.

Jennifer Sargent, ILWU spokeswoman in the Pacific Northwest, said “we have no reports of any vandalism or physical confrontations with any EGT employees.”

Longshoremen in July blocked a BNSF Railway train from calling at the EGT terminal. The latest picketing on Wednesday involved ILWU President Bob McEllrath, who stood with workers and their families on the tracks to block another BNSF train.

The ILWU reported that McEllrath was detained by police but was not arrested.

"We have received information that the train was vandalized overnight while it was in EGT custody apparently as part of some violent activity at the EGT site," said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas. "We are attempting to meet our common carrier obligations safely and without incident or injury to anyone.”

A federal court judge last week issued a temporary restraining order against ILWU picketing at the Longview terminal. In a statement Thursday, EGT CEO Larry Clarke said the ILWU protestors were acting “in blatant defiance of the law as spelled out by a federal court judge.”

West Coast container traffic up 5 percent
U.S. West Coast ports registered a modest increase of 5 percent in total loaded containers during the first six months of 2011 compared to the same period last year, the Journal of Commerce reported.

Export growth exceeded growth in imports, with exports up 9 percent and imports increasing 3 percent, according to statistics released Monday by the Pacific Maritime Association.

Exports also outperformed imports at Canada’s Pacific Coast ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert. Total 20-foot equivalent unit volume in Vancouver declined 6 percent compared to the first six months of 2010, while total loaded TEUs at Prince Rupert increased 12.5 percent.

On a regional basis on the U.S. West Coast, the Southern and Northern California gateways experienced stronger growth than the Washington ports. Total container volume in Los Angeles-Long Beach increased 6 percent in the first half of 2011. Oakland’s volume was also up 6 percent.

Total container volume in Seattle-Tacoma increased 1 percent. Portland’s container volume was up 17 percent, although the cargo base is modest compared to the other gateways.

At all of the ports, export growth clearly exceeded import growth. Exports were up 8 percent in Los Angeles-Long Beach and 9 percent in Oakland. Exports increased 10 percent in Seattle-Tacoma and 25 percent in Portland.

Imports increased 6 percent in Los Angeles-Long Beach as some carriers entered larger ships into their Pacific Southwest rotations and several niche carriers began inbound service to Southern California this past year. Imports were up 2 percent in Oakland.

Containerized imports increased 10 percent in Portland, while imports declined 8 percent in Seattle-Tacoma.

Containerized exports were strong at Port Metro Vancouver, increasing 13 percent compared to the first six months of 2010. Imports, meanwhile, declined 1 percent. Loaded exports at Prince Rupert increased 79.4 percent, while loaded import TEUs declined 4.5 percent.

Seattle container throughput up to 2.1 million TEUs in 2010
The port of Seattle broke its cargo volume record in 2010, reporting more than , surpassing the previous high in 2005 of 2.08 million TEUs, according to a Lloyd Special Report.

Several factors contributed to the increase in container volume. Exports remained strong throughout 2010, and other factors like the addition of Maersk/CMA CGMcontainer ships, increases in the sizes of ships calling at the port, and its “fee free’’ policies at the terminals contributed to the record success.

Container volumes at the port of New Orleans rose 31 percent last year, compared to 2009. The Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal handled 426,091 TEUs, compared to 325,857 the previous year.

“These gains are attributed to a strong export market and the result of non-traditional cargoes, such as steel products and grain, now moving by container,” LaGrange said. The Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal is served by Mediterranean Shipping Company, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk, Seaboard Marine and CSAV.
