Seago Line & Hamburg Süd added fifth vessel to the North Sea trade

With the aim of improving schedule reliability and providing a more cost efficient service, Seago Line & Hamburg Süd announced their decision to add a fifth container vessel to the trade between North Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, Port 2 Port reports.
The port rotation of the North Sea trade will include a call in Limassol and will have the following rotation: Haifa-Limassol-Alexandria-Ashdod-Felixtowe-Rotterdam-Bremerhaven-Antwerp-Haifa.
The new combination of service loop will provide for fast and direct connections and a vast service scope.

Hamburg Q1 throughput up 3.8 percent to 2.2 million TEUs

In the first three months of 2012 the Port of Hamburg achieved total throughput of 32.6 million tones, up 3.8 percent. At 2.2 million TEUs, throughput on the container handling was 5.2 percent higher than in the first quarter of 2011.

Compared to the main ports further West, Hamburg thus gained additional market share and strengthened its position as the Northern European hub for container traffic; Rotterdam’s throughput was down by 3.9 percent while Antwerp’s increase was comparatively minimal at 0.7 percent.

By comparison with the first quarter of 2011, general cargo throughput at the Port of Hamburg achieved a 7.9 percent advance to 23.1 million tonnes. Growth here was primarily powered by the strong trend in exports of containerised general cargoes.

“We are delighted that with a 5.2 percent rise in container throughput in the first quarter, the Port of Hamburg is markedly ahead of the 2.4 percent average growth for the four major ports in the North Range,” said Claudia Roller, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing. “The excellent result in this segment is what triggered the Port of Hamburg’s overall growth in the first quarter of 2012. For the remainder of the year we are reckoning on a further increase in total throughput.”

“We are headed in the right direction and have gained notable market shares. This is indicative for competitiveness of the Port of Hamburg”, said Jens Meier, HPA managing director.

Hanjin 13,100 TEU ship calls at Hamburg

During her maiden voyage the Hanjin Sooho, the Korean shipping company Hanjin’s largest containership to date, berthed in the Port of Hamburg early this month.

With a slot capacity of 13,100 TEUs, this mega-containership was handled at Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg.

The Hanjin Sooho is 366m long, 48.20m wide, and has over 800 connections for reefer containers. It was named in honour of the late Sooho Cho, former chairman of Hanjin Shipping Group, who died in 2006.

The Hanjin Sooho is the first of nine 13,100-TEU newbuildings to be deployed by Hanjin jointly with its partners on the East Asia-Europe service NE6 organised by the CKYH alliance whose other members are Coscon, “K’’ Line and Yang Ming.

With this NE6 service, the four shipping companies call at the ports of Hamburg, Rotterdam, Le Havre, Algeciras, Singapore, Hong Kong, Xingang, Kwangyang, Busan, Shanghai, Yantian, Singapore, Algeciras and Hamburg in a rotation lasting 77 days.

In 2011, a total of 5.2 million TEUs were handled in the Port of Hamburg’s container traffic with Asia.

“The forthcoming deepening of the navigational channel of the Lower and Outer Elbe will further boost Hamburg’s attractiveness as the European hub port for mega-ships such as the Hanjin Sooho,” said Patrick Won, Hanjin country manager, Germany.

FSL Trust secures second three-year time charter contract

FSL Trust Management Pte. Ltd. (“FSLTM”), as trustee-manager of First Ship Lease Trust (“FSL Trust” or the “Trust”) wishes to announce that its product tanker, ‘FSL Hamburg’, will be chartered to Petròleo Brasileiro S.A. (“Petrobras”) on a three-year time charter contract. This will be FSL Trust’s second time charter contract with Petrobras.
Subject to physical inspection of the vessel by Petrobras, ‘FSL Hamburg’ will be chartered on a gross daily charter rate of US$14,000 per day for a period of three years from the third quarter of 2012.
As an update to the announcement on 28 March 20121, the Trust would like to confirm that its product tanker, ‘FSL Singapore’, has cleared its physical inspection with Petrobras.
FSL Trust has incorporated a wholly-owned subsidiary, FSL Netherlands B.V., a private limited company in Amsterdam, to enter into the two time charter contracts directly with Petrobras. FSL Netherlands B.V. will in turn enter into back-to-back arrangements with FSL-18 Pte. Ltd. and FSL-19 Pte. Ltd.2 These arrangements will allow FSL Trust to take advantage of efficient tax structuring for these time charters.

Hamburg Süd announces changes to the Executive Board
After 18 years on the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, Joachim A Konrad, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, is to retire at the end of April 2012. The Advisory Board of Hamburg Süd has appointed Peter Frederiksen and Frank Smet to succeed him. They will be joining the Executive Board with effect from 1 May 2012. The scale and importance of the duties performed by Joachim A Konrad in past years prompted the Advisory Board to split the scope of responsibilities in the future, the Company press release said.

Joachim A Konrad’s career in shipping began in 1963 with a traineeship at Norddeutscher Lloyd. Following the amalgamation of Norddeutscher Lloyd and Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft in 1970 to form Hapag-Lloyd, he held numerous managerial positions there – lastly as Regional Director Asia and Regional Director Latin America. In 1994 he made the move to the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd. Responsible for worldwide Trade Management and for Marketing & Sales, Joachim A Konrad made a substantial contribution to boosting Hamburg Süd’s shipment volume from some 235,000 TEU in 1994 to roughly 3.2 million TEU in 2011. At the same time, he played a considerable part in building up an extensive network of services in Hamburg Süd’s core trades.

Peter Frederiksen has been Commercial Manager of Region Europe for Hamburg Süd since 2008. Prior to this he held leading positions in liner shipping at A.P. Moller Maersk for more than 25 years – amongst others in Asia and the USA. As Group Senior Vice President he was latterly responsible there for developing and supervising the global network. As a member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, he will take charge of Sales & Marketing, Customer Order Management and Region Europe beginning in May 2012.

Frank Smet moved to Hamburg Süd in October 1993 after working for over 16 years in leading positions for the Belgian shipping line Compagnie Maritime Belge (CM in South America. He was initially Commercial Manager Region South America West Coast and Region Australia/New Zealand. In the same function from 2004 he was instrumental in establishing the Hamburg Süd liner services and organisation in Asia. Since March 2008 he has successfully built up the new Line Management division in Hamburg. As from May 2012, his duties will include overseeing Network Management, Logistics and Region Caribbean/Latin America West Coast.

Hanjin offers Tianjin to north Europe deploying 13,000-10,000-TEUers
Hanjin has launched a new shipping line to Europe calling at Tianjin's Euroasia International Container Terminal, Xinhua reports.

This is the third international shipping route started from Tianjin, using four 13,000-TEU and seven 10,000-TEU ships, offering one sailing a week, calling at Algeciras, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Le Havre.

Hanjin is the largest shipping company in Korea and the ninth biggest in the world. It has a fleet of 100 containerships with a total capacity of 483,000 TEU.
