Morocco's Tangier-Med port complex 2010 container throughput up to 2 million TEUs
The Tangier-Med port complex consolidated its position in the container market in 2010, with over 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) handled, said a statement by the Tangier Med-Port Auhority, Globalarabnetwork reports.The complex handled during 2010 a total traffic of 23 million tonnes, i.e. the double of the traffic handled in 2009.
The container business of Tangier-Med, with 2,058,430 TEUs handled in 2010, represents nearly 70% of the national volume, registering a rise of 68.4% compared to 2009.
The port consolidated its liner shipping services and offers 48 regular maritime services (against only 35 in 2009), linking Tangier-Med to 120 international ports, including 37 in Europe, 31 in Asia, 30 in Africa, 16 in South America and 6 in North America.
Some 1,841 container ships docked in Tangier-Med, including 125 "megacarriers" with a larger capacity than 8,000 TEUs.
Import-export traffic increased by 18% compared to 2009, with 54,397 TEUs.
Last year was also marked by the starting up of Tangier-Med Passengers port, which was inaugurated on June 30 by HM King Mohammed VI.
