Khalifa Port takes delivery of final cranes
The second and final batch of container cranes for the new Khalifa Port were delivered to the Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) at the weekend, The National reports.
The three Super Post Panamax Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes are among the largest of their kind, with a lifting height of 44 metres and a weight capacity of 110 tonnes.
The first three of the six cranes were delivered in February. All six have come in by sea from the manufacturers, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries, in China. Their installation is part of phase one of the port's development, designed to give it the capacity to handle 2 million containers a year, rising to 15 million containers by 2030.
"The arrival of this final batch of the STS cranes completes one of the most important milestones for Khalifa Port as it gears up for the official opening in [the fourth quarter] this year", said Captain Mohammad Al Shamsi, the vice president of Ports at ADPC.
"Phase one of Khalifa Port is now 96 per cent complete, and we look forward to launching the port by end of this year when it will become the hub for commercial container traffic in Abu Dhabi."
Khalifa Port is being developed to serve the Kizad project, a 417-square-kilometre industrial zone strategically located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The phase of the project that is to open this is year is a 51-sq-km development worth Dh26.5 billion (US$7.2bn).
The overall project is due to be completed in 2030, and the new industrial zone will be expected to contribute up to 15 per cent of Abu Dhabi's non-oil GDP.
In addition to containers, the port, designed to be one of the world's most advanced deepwater terminals, will initially handle 12 million tonnes of general cargo. It is expected eventually to handle 35 million tonnes a year.
Up to 4 million tonnes of raw materials a year are also expected to be handled annually at the port's Emirates Aluminium berth, which is already in operation.

First phase of Khalifa Port will be completed this year
Phase one of Abu Dhabi's Dh26.2 billion Khalifa Port will be completed by the end of this year.Mohammad Al Shamsi, Vice-President of Ports Operations at Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), said the second phase of the project will begin in 2013. No exact date was given, Gulf News reports.
"About 96 per cent of Phase I of Khalifa Port has been completed so far. Once completed, the port will add 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containerised and 12 million tonnes of general cargo capacity," said Al Shamsi.
Speaking at the launch of the agenda for 2nd World Ports and Trade Summit which will be held in Abu Dhabi from today to Wednesday, Al Shamsi said that the area of phase one will be 52 square kilometres and cost Dh26.2 billion.
No slowdown
Al Shamsi remarked that port activities in the Gulf did not slow down over the past two years.
"Seaport activities in Abu Dhabi increased in 2011 by 47 per cent compared to 2010. More than 767,000 containers were handled in 2010 compared to 800,000 containers in 2011," he said.
Meanwhile, experts said that the UAE has become a regional hub for more than 25 per cent of the world's top 500 companies.
"There are more than $46 billion (Dh168 billion) commitments in the Mena region spent on 35 ports," said Chris Hayman, chairman of Seatrade Communications.
"This is quite a big figure and is a very strong indicator of future prospects for investments in seaports and trade as more than 90 per cent of goods is shipped by sea," he said.
Michael Vertigans, vice-president of corporate communications at ADPC, told Gulf News that Khalifa Port would stand out from the UAE's other ports.
"Khalifa Port is different from Mina Zayed and from Jebel Ali Port. Zayed Port cannot be expanded more and the containers coming to Zayed Port will be transferred to Khalifa Port once opened. Jebel Ali Port is for commercial purposes and for re-export businesses while Khalifa Port is for industrial purposes," he said.

Abu Dhabi Ship Building steps up focus on MRO services
Abu Dhabi Ship Building is stepping up its focus on ship maintenance, repairs and overhauling (MRO) services, one of its fastest-growing business divisions, Marinelog reports.
Abu Dhabi Ship Building has been showcasing its advanced MRO capabilities at the Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition & Conference at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
Each year Abu Dhabi Ship Building handles approximately 300 repair and upgrade projects for vessels such as tugs, barges, landing craft, dredges, work boats, crew boats, diving vessels, supply and safety vessels and AHTS's. Most of these jobs involve drydocking, although some are carried out afloat and offsite.
Mohamed Salem Al Junaibi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ship Building, said: "We are keen on leveraging our vast expertise in MRO services with the increased focus on this domain. Our world-class shipbuilding and repair facility has given us a significant competitive edge in the regional market, as we are able to undertake new construction projects in steel, aluminum alloy or composite materials. During the ongoing DIMDEX exhibition we are targeting long-term contracts and strategic partnerships, taking advantage of the growing demand for specialized naval support services in the region. The event also serves as an important venue to showcase our unique capabilities, adding momentum to our growth plans in the region."
Abu Dhabi Ship Building carries out daily maintenance and repair tasks for military clients in the UAE as well as foreign navies. It has fleet maintenance contracts with the UAE Navy, UAE Coast Guard and the recently established Critical National Infrastructure Authority. It also has long-term fleet maintenance contracts with leading offshore fleet operators ESNAAD, which has recently signed a three-year rate-running contract worth AED 70 million, and IRSHAD. Other prominent clients include Boskalis, Van Oordz, Damen Marine Services, Al Seer Marine, Zakher Marine International, Khalid Faraj Shipping, NPCC, MARCAP and NMDC.
During DIMDEX, Abu Dhabi Ship Building also announced that the first and second vessels of the Baynunah Corvette Class Program will be delivered to the UAE Navy by the end of summer, while also highlighting the capabilities of the other vessels under construction, including the fourth vessel of the Baynunah project named "Mezyad" that was recently launched.
Abu Dhabi Ship Building recently completed upgrade programs at the company's facility, including the extension of the quay wall by about 155 meters, and the completion of a new pontoon and an electrical substation. The expansion program enables the company to accommodate more vessels for fit outs, tests and trials.

Abu Dhabi’s Western Region inaugurates new port facility
Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), in coordination with Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), has unveiled a new logistics port facility located on Sir Bani Yas Island in the Western Region. An opening ceremony was held on site this week in the presence of Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer at ADPC, Captain Mohamed Al Shamisi, Vice President of the Ports Unit at ADPC, and Jim Pringle, Acting Chief Executive Officer, TDIC along with Western Region Municipality General Manager, Musabah Mubarak Al Marar and seniors from the Department of Transport, the ADPC press release said.
ADPC has been working alongside TDIC in order to develop the new port on the western side of Sir Bani Yas Island. It provides state–of-the-art port facilities on the island. Now, logistics between Sir Bani Yas and the mainland ports of Jebel Dhanna and Mugharrag Port have been strengthened. Goods and services transported between the island and the mainland will benefit from the new, modern facilities and easier access.
The conception to completion of the new Sir Bani Yas Port took two years and was supported by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, ensuring that the facility will sufficiently support the ongoing tourism projects being developed on the island.
The Sir Bani Yas Logistics Port is now fully operational with three roll-on roll-off ramps, a boat pontoon and a control office. It will be able to handle all TDIC construction materials and workers in a faster, safer and more efficient manner. It will also provide back-of-house operational support, thus ensuring the tourism continuity of the island.
Commenting on the development, Captain Mohamed Al Shamisi, said: “ADPC is proud to play a part in the development of ports in the Western Region, which form an important part of our remit and are vital to the communities they serve. This new facility will help streamline business, contributing to the region’s economic and tourism development. We will continue with our ongoing commitment to provide excellent services in all the ports we look after.”
James Pringle, Acting CEO of TDIC commented: “The Sir Bani Yas Port is an important addition to the island. This dedicated construction and back-of-house operations hub will help to enable the smooth running of the transportation of goods between the island and the mainland, which in turn will assist us to continue to develop Sir Bani Yas Island into one of the emirate’s leading tourism destinations.”
Western Region Municipality General Manager Musabah Mubarak Al Marar said: “I would like to extend our appreciation to the leadership of our government which is constantly supporting the development of the Western Region especially his Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and his Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and his Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Western Region.
Sir Bani Yas Island is considered as one of the largest open natural reserves which the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan first laid its grounds and which Abu Dhabi’s leadership is continuing in his footsteps of developing it into one of the Emirate’s top touristic destinations. The new logistics port at Sir Bani Yas will efficiently contribute to the development and completion of the touristic projects at Sir Bani Yas Island.”
The Sir Bani Yas Port has been constructed in such a way that it can be easily modified and expanded in the future to meet any additional requirements by TDIC.
Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) is a master developer of ports and industrial zones.
ADPC’s core objective is to facilitate the diversification of Abu Dhabi’s economy by acting as an enabler for development and trade. It will achieve this by managing commercial ports throughout the Emirate, supporting partners with their infrastructure projects and setting up new companies and joint ventures with partners who service and operate in the ports and industrial zones sector.
ADPC was created in 2006 as part of the restructuring of the commercial ports sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and given control and regulatory enforcement power over all commercial port assets previously owned by the Abu Dhabi Seaports Authority.
ADPC strives to be at the forefront of progress in industrial logistics and infrastructure and is currently focused on creating one of the world’s largest concentrations of industry at Kizad.
