Taganrog Port first-quarter throughput drops 34 percent

Cargo traffic at Taganrog Commercial Seaport (TCSP) in the first quarter of 2012 totaled 197,000 tons, which is a 34-percent slump from the same period a year ago, the Company said on Wednesday.



Handling of imports plummeted by 77% to 23,000 tons, exports were down 3% to 174,000 tons.


The volume of bulk cargo, which accounts for 67% of freight flows passing through the port, shrank by 28% to 131,000 tonnes. In particular, the port saw a 41-percent decline in coal exports, to 102,000 tons and a threefold drop in ore cargo, to 6,000 tons.

General cargo volume slumped as much as five times to 7,000 tons, handling of metals reduced by 34% to 5,700 tons.


Container traffic fell 8% to 2,200 TEUs. Shipments of liquid bulk rose 5% to 44,800 tons.


In January-March Taganrog Commercial Seaport handled 3,172 rail cars and 56 ships.


The first-quarter throughput decline was attributed primarily to heavy ice conditions in the Sea of Azov in February-March.


JSC Taganrog Commercial Seaport is the main stevedoring company of the port of Taganrog, which operates at Births Number 1- 5, 7-8. The main shareholder of TCSP is UCL Port, a stevedoring division of UCL Holding, controlling scores of stevedoring assets in the South and the North-West of Russia.

Icebreakers resume escort of ship convoys in Azov Sea
The icebreaker Kapitan Demidov left vessels at the Temryuk anchorage as the melting ice, open water enabled access of cargo ship to / from the Port of Temryuk and has reached the Kerch Strait. The icebreaker has started clearing a path for a convoy of 12 ships bound to the ports Taganrog, Azov and Rostov-on-Don, the Azov Ice Ops Headquarters said.

Meanwhile, the icebreakers Kapitan Chudinov, the Kapitan Moshkin and the Kapitan Krutov resumed escort 36 vessels, which were previously stopped by heavy ice conditions.

As of 05:00 pm, March 20, 2012, there were 50 merchant ships in the Sea of Azov, 49 of them were en route and one stricken ship. There were 96 ships ready to depart from the ports of the Azov Sea, 19 of them have ice-class. 53 ships are expecting icebreaker assistance to pass the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov.

In the Belosaraysky Bay - open water with some ice floes. In the west - there is an ice pack, thin first-year and gray-white ice with a big patch of ice-free water. There is close gray-white ice in the eastern part of the Azov Sea. The Kerch area is ice free.


The Rosmorport’s icebreakers continue to assist shipping in the Sea of Azov. For the past day the Kapitan Demidov has escorted two convoys of 5 and 8 ships to open water, Kapitan Moshkin and Kapitan Krutov will lead a 9-ship convoy to the Kerch Strait.


Icebreaker Kapitan Chudinov is now leading a convoy of 10 ships to Rostov-on-Don, while the Malta flag MV Stefania-Michaela is sailing without assistance.


As of 5:00 pm (Moscow Time),16 March there were 21 cargo ships in the Sea of Azov, 20 of them were moving and 1 was damaged, 92 vessels (ice-classed -1 were ready to depart from the Azov Sea ports. In the Black Sea there were 82 ships (30 with ice-class hulls) – to pass through the Kerch Strait.

Ice hampers icebreaker operation in Azov Sea

The icebreaker Kapitan Demidov had to stop her operations in the Azov Sea due to ice shearing and pressure, the Azov Ice Ops Headquarters said.

Two icebreakers to escort a ship convoy from Taganrog port

The icebreakers Kapitan Demidov and Kapitan Chudinov have commenced organizing a convoy of ships to escort them from anchorage of the port of Taganrog, the Azov Ice Operations HQ said.


The Kapitan Demidov is guiding one ship from the port of Taganrog to a caravan of 10 vessels led the Kapitan Chudinov. Another five cargo ships from the port of Yeysk will join the convoy later.


The icebreakers Kapitan Moshkin and Kapitan Krutov continue escorting a convoy of16 ships bound for the ports of Yeysk, Taganrog, Azov and Rostov-on-Don.


As of 17:00, March 12, there were 28 ships in the Sea of Azov, including 27 ships en route and one stricken ship, 84 cargo ships are ready to depart from the Azov Sea-based ports, 8 of them have ice-class hulls. There are 57 Azov Sea-bound vessels to be escorted through the Kerch Strait, 9 of them – ice-classed ships.
